Season 2 of Never Have I Ever, created by executive producer Mindy Kaling, along with Lang Fisher as the co-executive producer, showrunner, and writer is now streaming on digital giant Netflix.
The first season is full of trials and tribulations of Devi who is desperate to have a boy friend in her life while combating with her day-to-day issues at her school as well as at home with her mother.
The Season 2 of Never Have I Ever offers a better, bolder and beautiful picture of Devi’s life which takes a couple of unexpected turns with new acquaintances and new romantic relationships popping up during the course.
Story
The quests of Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) in the Season 2 are quite interesting mode while while she keeps her self-discovery mode aside. She founds herself now romantically caught between two boys Ben (Jaren Lewison) Paxton (Darren Barnet) much to her delight.
Her anger becomes a topic, as do her jealousy and insecurity following the arrival of the latest Indian student Aneesa (Megan Suri) at Sherman Oaks High School as she continues to deal with the loss of her dad taking her to some darker emotional places.
Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) too plunges deep into the romance for the first time since her husband Mohan’s death. She fills the void left by him with a fellow doctor (Common), who somehow tries to make up for the absence of Sendhil Ramamurthy in the latest season.
The Devi-Nalini dynamics are also high points to watch out for. It is changing, of course, and while there are tussles, there’s such endearing love. Here, Nalini’s expectations, her desires are also brought to the front, lending numerous layers to her character.
On the other hand, Kamala (Richa Moorjani) the beautiful cousin of Devi decides to travel full Devi rather than taking note of whatever advice her boyfriend had to give her. However, naïve Kamala is, she proves to be a hard nut to crack on the professional front.
Devi now has a whole-time job as she becomes ‘Crazy Devi’ who has to cope with several people at several levels including her BFF Ramona Young (Eleanor), Lee Rodriguez (Fabiola) beside her depression and how she manages to get through this mess is what gets revealed in this season of Never Have I Ever.
Performances
One is bound to root for Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as she has shown more maturity in Season 2 and got deeper into the skin of the character well. She was an absolute treat to watch and once again proved that her selection among some 15000 aspirants for the role of Devi was a wise one.
Megan may be a welcome addition also and manages to strike a chord with the audience with her looks as well as with her performance.
Poorna and Richa are even as believable as together would expect them to be and proved their mettle, while Jaren and Darren do what they are expected to do with grace and poise.
Behind the scenes
Full credit to the host of writers Mindy Kaling, Akshara Sekar, Erica Oyama, Amina Munir, Aaron Geary, Ben Steiner, Marina Cookenberg, Vance Stringer, Dave King, Asmita Paranjare, Christina Hjelm, Chris Schleicher, and Lang Fisher for putting together some really complicated issues in a compact full and appealing manner. In addition to the stronger writing skills, the season 2 presents an impactful narrative that uplifts the premise.
Moreover, the series explored aspects of racism and sexism that haunt the Indian community abroad in a subtle manner which is another stronger point that cannot be undermined.
The composition of Joseph Stephens and all the soundtracks add more richness to the narrative that went a long way in making it totally absorbing.
