The internet is buzzing with anticipation as a brand-new trailer drops for the upcoming A24 psychological crime thriller, Primetime. The footage showcases a deeply transformative and chilling performance by Robert Pattinson as the iconic television journalist, Chris Hansen. Arriving hot on the heels of glowing critical acclaim at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, the preview gives audiences a gripping look into one of the most intense television phenomena of the mid-2000s.

Set to hit theaters nationwide on September 25, 2026, the film is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about releases of the year.

Inside the World of Primetime

The official logline for the film sets a high-stakes tone: “In 2006, To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen sets out to make television history.”

Developed by A24, Primetime chronicles the true-to-life cultural phenomenon of To Catch a Predator, which Hansen famously spearheaded with Dateline NBC in 2006. The narrative follows Hansen and his team as they monitor online chat rooms, tracking down adults who attempt to meet minors for illicit encounters. These chilling investigations culminated in elaborate, hidden-camera sting operations that caught suspects red-handed on national television.

However, the movie goes far beyond the television screen. Screenwriter Ajon Singh crafted the screenplay based on a compelling 2007 Esquire profile by Luke Dittrich, delving deep into the psychological toll and intense behind-the-scenes struggles that Hansen faced while navigating the dangerous world of investigative journalism.

Critical Acclaim and Behind-the-Scenes Drama

Primetime marks the feature film directorial debut of Lance Oppenheim. The psychological thriller recently held its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it captivated critics and currently boasts an impressive 94% Tomatometer score from 33 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the early critical success, the project has not been without real-world controversy. The real Chris Hansen previously slammed the cinematic adaptation, characterizing the film as “much darker and way more dramatic” than his actual experiences. The tension reportedly escalated at the Venice Film Festival, where Hansen was allegedly denied entry to the premiere after refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to the screening.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Aside from Robert Pattinson’s haunting lead performance, the movie boasts a remarkably stacked ensemble cast. The film stars Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, musician Phoebe Bridgers, Matthew Maher, Bokeem Woodbine, Jessica Hecht, Jonathan Lipnicki, Tony Revolori, Creed Bratton, Alex Winter, and Sean Bridgers. Additionally, Anna Faris makes a special appearance in a small role as Mary Joan Hansen, the wife of the central character.

Behind the camera, the film features a powerhouse production team. Robert Pattinson himself served as a producer on the project, collaborating alongside notable industry heavyweights including Ari Aster, Fred Berger, Tyler Campellone, William Iannaccone, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Lars Knudsen, and Brighton McCloskey.

As the September 2026 release date approaches, fans of psychological thrillers and prestige drama alike will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on how this gripping real-life story translates to the big screen.
