Modern cinema has largely become a sterile landscape when it comes to depicting physical intimacy. While independent projects occasionally break the mold, mainstream films featuring recognizable stars have succumbed to a conservative, almost puritanical caution. Enter director Gregg Araki. Absent from theaters since his 2014 film White Bird in a Blizzard, those familiar with his colorful filmography know he has never shied away from exploring human desire. As an influential pioneer of the early 1990s New Queer Cinema movement—best remembered for his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy consisting of Totally F*ed Up, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere—Araki is the perfect filmmaker to challenge contemporary boundaries. With his latest release, I Want Your Sex, he takes a vibrant aim at heterosexual dynamics, delivering a film that is both intellectually stimulating and unapologetically erotic.

Synopsis

The narrative centers on Elliot, a somewhat lost young man searching for his purpose in life. His fortunes seem to shift when he secures an interview for an assistant position with Erika Tracy, a celebrated and fiercely confident fine artist. However, what begins as a standard professional opportunity rapidly evolves into a highly charged, unconventional relationship. As the lines between work and wild intimacy blur, Elliot finds himself navigating a complex, submissive-dominant dynamic that forces him to re-evaluate his identity, his relationships, and his boundaries.

Performances

The success of the film relies heavily on its cast, and the actors deliver outstanding work. Cooper Hoffman portrays Elliot with a brilliant blend of innocence and curiosity, perfectly capturing the essence of an everyman who is eager yet utterly out of his depth. Opposite him, Olivia Wilde is magnetic as Erika, playing the commanding artist with absolute conviction and a sharp, dominant energy.

The supporting cast adds fantastic texture to Elliot’s chaotic world. Charli XCX is excellent as Elliot’s emotionally detached, deadpan girlfriend, Minerva, while Chase Sui Wonders brings warmth to her role as his loyal friend, Apple. Additionally, Mason Gooding shines as Zap, Elliot’s sexually confident coworker. The contrast between Elliot’s softer, more reserved nature and Zap’s uninhibited confidence provides both comedic relief and a thoughtful commentary on modern masculinity.

Behind the Lens

Gregg Araki, co-writing with Karley Sciortino, injects the film with his signature surrealist style. Rather than relying on gritty realism, Araki uses fantasy elements to represent Elliot’s internal state. Whether illustrating the overwhelming nature of desire through exaggerated animations or visually showing Elliot sinking deep into his mattress during a period of depression, these stylized choices bypass heavy exposition in favor of pure, expressive cinema.

The film’s aesthetic is an absolute feast, filled with saturated colors, extravagant wardrobe choices, and provocative art installations. Even the soundtrack pays homage to classic pop culture, drawing its title from the famous George Michael song. Most importantly, the physical intimacy onscreen is treated with respect and playfulness. The sexual encounters are never gratuitous; instead, they serve as crucial narrative tools that explore power dynamics, consent, and self-discovery without preaching to the audience.

Final Verdict

While the film occasionally leaves a few secondary plotlines unresolved—particularly regarding Elliot’s strained relationships with Minerva and Apple—this mirroring of life’s natural messiness does little to detract from the overall experience. I Want Your Sex is a refreshing, hilarious, and genuinely provocative piece of filmmaking that stands as a loud protest against our increasingly reserved cultural attitudes. By embracing the joy, absurdity, and transformative power of physical connection, Gregg Araki has delivered a vital breath of fresh air to the big screen.

I Want Your Sex opens in theaters on July 31.
