Disney+ is taking a massive swing this year with one of its most ambitious streaming projects to date. The platform is transforming the globally beloved web novel and comic phenomenon into a lavish live-action fantasy series. Titled The Remarried Empress, this high-profile production features an entirely South Korean ensemble cast portraying characters inside a classic Western-style royal court.
With nearly three billion digital views worldwide, the source material already boasts a massive following. However, the decision to cast Korean actors in a distinctly European-inspired medieval kingdom generated significant buzz and debate online prior to release.
Building a Tangible European World
During a press conference held in Seoul, acclaimed director Cho Soo-won addressed early concerns regarding the cultural and aesthetic juxtaposition. Rather than relying heavily on green screens, the production prioritized physical authenticity by shooting on location across Europe.
The imperial palace scenes for the Eastern Empire were captured at the historic Schleissheim Palace in Germany. Meanwhile, the lush gardens where Empress Navier encounters her new romantic prospect were filmed at the Kromeriz Gardens in the Czech Republic. To further immerse viewers, the crew even integrated Korean-language storefront signs into the classic architecture of Kutna Hora streets, blending different cultural elements to visually anchor the narrative.
Overcoming Initial Hesitation
Leading man Ju Ji-hoon, who stars as the conflicted Emperor Sovieshu, confessed that he initially questioned whether a Korean cast could successfully pull off a European court drama. He admitted that his early doubts stemmed from personal prejudice regarding unfamiliar stylistic blends. To overcome this, he analyzed traditional period-drama speech patterns to ensure his performance remained believable within the Western aesthetic.
Balancing the tone of the adaptation proved to be another hurdle. While the original 2018 web novel leaned into a darker, more serious mood, the 2019 webtoon adaptation offered a brighter, more playful atmosphere. Director Cho explained that the live-action series successfully navigates a middle ground to honor both formats. Furthermore, to fit the expansive lore into a concise 10-episode arc, the writers narrowed their focus onto the four primary characters, maximizing the dramatic and provocative beats of the storyline.
Plot, Cast, and Early Surprises
Based on the wildly successful Naver webtoon, The Remarried Empress chronicles the dramatic downfall of a royal marriage. Empress Navier (played by Shin Min-a) finds her union with Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji-hoon) unraveling after he falls for a runaway slave named Rashta (Lee Se-young) and demands a divorce. Refusing to lose her dignity, Navier agrees to the separation under one condition: she must be granted permission to wed Crown Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong-sdk) of the rival Western Kingdom.
Ahead of its global streaming debut, the project has already shattered engagement metrics. Its official trailer surpassed 13 million views within its first 48 days online, following packed preview screenings at the Busan International Film Festival.
Release Schedule and Where to Watch
Disney+ and Hulu announced a special schedule update during the Seoul press conference as a token of appreciation for the fans’ immense support. Instead of the initially planned Wednesday debut, the series will now launch its first four episodes a day early on Tuesday, November 3.
Following the grand premiere, two new episodes of The Remarried Empress will drop every subsequent Wednesday, leading up to the epic series finale on November 25.
