Charli xcx Merges Cinema and Sound with a New Visual Companion

Pop innovator Charli xcx has released a striking black‑and‑white short film that serves as the visual counterpart to her latest project, “Music, Fashion, Film”. Debuted on Friday, July 24, the piece was crafted to echo the album’s monochrome aesthetic while offering fans an intimate look into the singer’s creative process.

The film opens with a reflective voice‑over that feels more like a personal journal entry than a traditional introduction. Charli explains how the album came together, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defined its creation. She notes that every track was shaped alongside longtime friends and producers A.G. Cook and Finn Keane, describing them as “close, close friends” forged through shared studio sessions.

Prior to the album’s official launch, Charli screened the film in theaters worldwide, allowing audiences to experience the work exactly as she envisioned. This global rollout emphasized her desire for the visual and auditory elements to be consumed together, reinforcing the project’s interdisciplinary nature.

A Track‑by‑Track Visual Narrative

Each song on “Music, Fashion, Film” is paired with its own music video segment, stitched together by transitional passages where Charli provides context for the upcoming track. In the lead‑up to “Card Declined”, she shares her fascination with shopping while traveling through cities such as Paris and London, turning a mundane activity into a thematic bridge.

The “Camera” video features acclaimed actor Vincent Cassel. The clip captures a candid exchange: Charli’s pitch to recruit Cassel and his amused response. She describes the piece as an exploration of the performer‑camera relationship—simultaneously alluring, exciting, and at times vulnerably embarrassing.

The album’s closing track, “No One Lasts Forever”, brings legendary director David Cronenberg into the fold. Set in Toronto, their conversation delves into mortality and its connection to artistic expression, adding a philosophical layer to the record’s finale.

From Soundtracks to Festival Stages

“Music, Fashion, Film” follows Charli’s recent work on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 8 in February, and the 2024 blockbuster hit “Brat”. The artist is set to perform selections from the new album when she headlines Lollapalooza on Friday, July 31 at Chicago’s Grant Park. After the festival, she will embark on a North American arena tour beginning in September, promising fans a live extension of the album’s cinematic vibe.

How to Watch the Film

The full black‑and‑white short film is available for streaming on Charli xcx’s official channels. Viewers are encouraged to watch it in tandem with listening to “Music, Fashion, Film” to experience the complete vision she has crafted.
