Peacock’s latest limited series The Five-Star Weekend arrives with considerable fanfare, positioning itself as the newest entrant in the increasingly crowded Wine Mom Mystery landscape. Drawing from Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, the eight-episode drama assembles an impressive ensemble cast led by Jennifer Garner, promising viewers a tantalizing blend of murder, secrets, and female friendship set against the picturesque backdrop of Nantucket. However, after screening the initial three episodes, the promised tension and intrigue remain frustratingly absent, leaving audiences with a polished yet profoundly hollow viewing experience that substitutes genuine drama for aesthetic appeal.

Synopsis

Hollis, a celebrated food influencer renowned for her impeccable baking skills and picture-perfect social media presence, finds her carefully curated world shattered when her husband dies unexpectedly. Seeking solace and companionship during her period of profound grief, she invites four women from different chapters of her life to her luxurious Nantucket estate. The gathering includes Dru-Ann, a tenacious sports agent; Tatum, a childhood friend grappling with health concerns; Brooke, a spirited mother figure; and Gigi, an enthusiastic follower meeting the others for the first time. As the women navigate old resentments, buried secrets, and Hollis’ rigid agenda of activities, an ominous revelation threatens to destabilize their fragile reunion. The story explores whether these five women can weather the storm of long-hidden truths while confronting their own identities and relationships.

Performances

Jennifer Garner delivers a performance that walks a fine line between sunny optimism and emotional depth, portraying Hollis with genuine vulnerability beneath her manicured exterior. Her interpretation recalls similar roles, though it lacks the nuanced complexity the material perhaps demands. Regina Hall brings dignity and gravitas to Dru-Ann, delivering nuanced work that elevates the material considerably. D’Arcy Carden provides comic relief and heartfelt moments as the relatable Brooke, showcasing her trademark wit and warmth.

Chloë Sevigny attempts to inject edge into Tatum, the group’s supposed rebel, yet the writing constrains her potential, offering limited opportunities to demonstrate genuine rebellion. Gemma Chan makes a memorable impression despite minimal screen time, bringing depth to the outsider Gigi. Timothy Olyphant appears as Hollis’s former flame Jack, providing charm but lacking the dimensional complexity that might have made his character more compelling. The ensemble collectively delivers adequate performances, though they frequently seem constrained by underdeveloped scripts that fail to fully exploit their considerable talents.

Behind the Lens

The production design deserves particular commendation, with Hollis’s stunning Nantucket home serving as a character unto itself. The visual aesthetic deliberately evokes comparisons to prestige productions like Big Little Lies and The White Lotus, though the writing lacks the sharpness and psychological depth that define those series. The direction maintains a pleasant, unobtrusive quality that serves the surface-level narrative adequately.

The series employs padding techniques that test viewer patience, including extended subplots involving Hollis’s college-age daughter and numerous flashbacks that stretch the narrative across eight episodes when a more condensed format might have served the story better. The soundtrack leans heavily toward inoffensive, accessible tracks that function as what might be termed a “cool mom” playlist—pleasant but forgettable. The dialogue between female characters often lacks the sharp wit and emotional authenticity that could have elevated the production beyond its comfortable mediocrity.

Final Verdict

The Five-Star Weekend ultimately fails to deliver the drama and intrigue it promises, resulting in a disappointingly tepid viewing experience. While the ensemble cast performs admirably within their limitations and the production values remain consistently high, the series suffers from vague emotional stakes and writing that prioritizes style over substance. The central mystery, while containing seeds of genuine intrigue, fails to generate sufficient tension to sustain viewer engagement across multiple episodes.

Despite moments of genuine emotional resonance and strong performances from its female leads, the production feels more like an elaborate advertisement for luxury lifestyle brands than a substantive exploration of grief, friendship, and female relationships. The final act does introduce some explosive confrontations that briefly elevate the material, though these prove insufficient to rescue the overall experience from its slumbering mediocrity. Viewers seeking the sharp, psychologically nuanced storytelling that defines the best of the genre will find themselves disappointed, left admiring the beautiful scenery while craving deeper emotional nourishment.
