Specter of Success: Disney+ Secures Steven Spielberg’s Live-Action “Casper” Series

A Supernatural Dream Team Assembles

In a significant victory for its streaming catalog, Disney+ has emerged triumphant from a highly competitive five-way bidding war to secure the development of a new live-action series based on Casper the Friendly Ghost. The project boasts an impressive creative pedigree, spearheaded by Oscar-winning visionary Steven Spielberg and the acclaimed duo behind Disney+’s successful Goosebumps adaptation, Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston.

A Modern, Moody Reimagining

While specific plot details for the Casper series are being kept tightly under wraps, early descriptions indicate it will present a contemporary refresh of the cherished Harvey Comics character. Industry whispers suggest the tone may skew darker, drawing creative inspiration from the gothic and successful reinvention of Wednesday for The Addams Family. This approach promises to explore new dimensions of the famously affable spirit, potentially introducing him to a whole new generation of viewers.

Rob Letterman, whose directing credits include the hybrid live-action/CGI hit Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, is attached to direct the series in addition to co-writing with Hilary Winston. Both will serve as executive producers alongside Steven Spielberg, who also held an executive producer role on the beloved 1995 Casper feature film.

A Landmark Cross-Studio Collaboration

Adding a fascinating layer to the announcement is the involvement of Universal Content Productions (UCP). This partnership marks a strategic, cross-studio collaboration, bringing a major Universal-owned intellectual property to the Disney+ platform for the first time. This move aligns perfectly with Universal Studio Group’s established strategy of distributing its content across a wide array of major streaming services, including Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV+.

This new series represents the latest attempt to resurrect Casper in live-action, following a separate project that was in development at Peacock in 2022 but failed to materialize. The potent combination of Spielberg’s backing and the proven success of the Goosebumps team evidently struck a powerful chord with buyers, ensuring this incarnation moves forward.

A Cherished Icon’s Enduring Legacy

Since his first apparition in Famous Studios theatrical animated shorts in the 1940s, Casper has become a perennial pop culture figure. The character flourished in Harvey Comics throughout the 1950s and later soared through numerous comic books, animated television shows, and the groundbreaking 1995 film starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman. That film was notable for its seamless blend of live-action and CGI, a visual approach this new series is expected to emulate.

For Disney+, this acquisition is a notable departure, representing a rare instance of the platform bringing a major piece of pre-existing IP that is neither a Disney-owned property nor a direct book adaptation. If greenlit, Casper will find a fitting home among other spectral friends, like Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

With the project still in its early developmental stages, the formidable talent involved provides strong confidence that this new vision of Casper the Friendly Ghost will successfully materialize on our screens.
