The cinematic landscape is preparing for one of its most anticipated returns as Lionsgate and Icon Productions officially announce the completion of principal photography for The Resurrection of the Christ. This ambitious project serves as the direct successor to the 2004 cultural phenomenon The Passion of the Christ, a film that remains a benchmark for independent cinema and one of the most successful R-rated releases in history.
The milestone was confirmed by Mel Gibson and Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. The production, which spanned 134 days, concluded ahead of its projected schedule. Utilizing the stunning and historically rich landscapes of Italy, the crew filmed across Rome, Matera, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, and Brindisi (specifically Torre Guaceto), providing a visually authentic backdrop for the narrative.
A Grand Cinematic Vision: Two-Part Release Schedule
In a move that underscores the massive scope of the story, Lionsgate revealed that The Resurrection of the Christ will be presented to audiences in two distinct chapters. The studio has strategically timed these releases to coincide with significant calendar dates.
Part One is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2027, marking Ascension Day. The concluding chapter, Part Two, will follow a year later, arriving on May 25, 2028, aligning with the Memorial Day weekend and Ascension Day 2028. This staggered release strategy highlights the density of the material Mel Gibson has developed over the last two decades.
The Artistic Ambition and Stellar Cast
The film features an international ensemble dedicated to bringing this spiritual epic to life. The cast includes Jaakko Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett.
Adam Fogelson praised Mel Gibson for his unique ability to blend grand spectacle with intimate emotional resonance. He compared the footage captured on set to “masterwork paintings,” noting that Mel Gibson possesses a rare storyteller’s instinct. According to Fogelson, the film represents an extraordinary level of ambition that global audiences have been anticipating for over twenty years.
A Twenty-Year Mission for Mel Gibson
For Mel Gibson, this project is more than just a sequel; it is the culmination of a career-long objective. “This film represents a major part of my life’s work,” Mel Gibson stated, reflecting on the intense physical and artistic demands of the production. He described the project as a “mission” to recount what he views as the most pivotal story in human history.
By reuniting with several key collaborators from the original production of The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson aimed to maintain the high standard of craftsmanship established two decades ago. He expressed deep gratitude to his cast and crew for their dedication to his specific vision, which was supported throughout by the team at Lionsgate and Bruce Davey under the Icon Productions banner.
Global Distribution Strategy and Box Office Legacy
Lionsgate will handle the theatrical rollout in North America and the United Kingdom. In Latin America, the film will be distributed through IDC, a joint venture involving Lionsgate. The scale of the release is further emphasized by a network of major international partners, including Leonine in Germany, Metropolitan Film in France, and Diamond in Spain, among many others across Europe, Africa, and the Baltics. Icon Productions will personally oversee the release in Australia and New Zealand.
The financial expectations for the sequel are naturally high. The original The Passion of the Christ was produced on a modest $30 million budget but shattered records with an $83 million opening weekend, eventually earning $610 million worldwide. This sequel continues the fruitful relationship between Mel Gibson and Lionsgate, following their success with the Oscar-nominated Hacksaw Ridge and the upcoming thriller Flight Risk.
