A rehashed cop drama marked by brilliant performances
Cops chasing gangsters is passé. So The Red Chillies Entertainment has come up with a different kind of cop drama Class of 83 based on the book by Hussain Zaidi where the protagonist as a head of an institution makes use of the system and went on to hunt down the gangsters in his fashion with the help of his protégés in this Netflix film which is streaming now on their platform.
Storyline
Vijay Singh (Bobby Deol) during his punishment posting as Dean of Police Training Centre in Nashik picks up four underscoring and underrated trainees who are on the verge of rustication to rewrite the vengeance drama against Kalsekar, the underground gangster of Mumbai.
Vijay Singh’s mission left unaccomplished as a result he has to suffer both on the personal and professional front. While it was difficult to compensate for the personal loss, his punishment in the wake of an encounter with Kalsekar gang has opened a new chapter in his life to rewrite the syllabus and regain the lost ground on the professional front.
This punishment which made Vijay Singh as Dean of the Police Training Centre in Nashik made him more focused to achieve his target as he now decides to train his pupils to fight against not only Kalsekar but also to expose and vindicate the ugly nexus between politicians and underworld.

Performances of Actors
Its Bobby Deol all the way and there won’t be Class of 83 without him. His charm, elegance, and authority are still aglow and his comeback performance underlines his versatility which makes Class of 83 thoroughly engaging only because of his dignified presence in the film.
The new faces, the five encounter specialists, Hitesh Bhojraj as Vishnu Varde, Bupendra Jadawat as Pramod Shukla, Sameer Paranjape as Aslam Khan, Ninad Mahajani as Lakshman Jadhav and Prithwik Pratap as Janardan Surve ooze lot of confidence and holds promise provided they sharpen their skills like dialogue delivery and modulation to grow further in industry.
Other actors, Joy Sengupta as Raghav Desai and Anup Soni as Manohar Patkar have done well within their characters.
Direction & Technical Aspects
More than anything else, the art department and production designers need to be appreciated for their hard work in recreating the 1982-83 look with great authenticity. The double-decker buses, the Ambassadors, and Contessas have given a classy look to Class of 83.
The direction of Atul Sabharwal has faltered at many stages mainly due to poor screenplay and lopsided characterization. A premise with potential which should have been packed with a lot of action and gripping drama fails to get translated onto the screen in true perspective due to the wavering screenplay.
With a highly potential actor like Bobby at the helm, more punch could have been added to the character of Vijay Singh by reworking the original story and fine -tuning it by keeping 2020 in mind so that the film is more contemporary in its outlook rather than getting locked in the 80s. An improved story and an improvised screenplay could have made Class of 83 a class apart.
The camera work of Mario Poljac and music of veteran Viju Shah (who can forget the cult film Tridev?) reflects the mood of 1983 admirably.
Verdict & Rating
Bobby Deol lifts this film from being just an average one to an above-average fare with his top-notch performance and invincible screen presence. If the same story was recreated as Class of 2020 (due respects to ALTBalaji who already made a series by this name) by adding a new angle to organized crime with a fast forward screenplay and effective presentation, then Class of 83 could have become a bigger success than what it was now.
