In a bold move that has captured international attention, Bryan Adams has unveiled a brand-new patriotic track titled “51st State” specifically designed to honor Canada Day. The rock legend’s latest musical release serves as an unapologetic response to ongoing political commentary from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Canada’s status relative to the United States.
The Origins of the Song Title
The provocative title of Adams’ new single stems from President Trump’s repeated references to Canada as America’s potential “51st state.” This characterization has evidently struck a nerve with Canadians from coast to coast, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, sparking widespread frustration across the nation.
Trump first introduced this controversial terminology in 2024, shortly after securing victory in the most recent presidential election. Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, the former president posted: “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State.”
Following this initial statement, Trump further elaborated on his perspective, claiming: “They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”
Adams’ Response: Timing and Intent
Rather than responding immediately to Trump’s commentary, Adams strategically chose to release his response specifically on Canada Day, making the timing both symbolic and significant. The legendary singer-songwriter explained his creative motivation in an official statement, emphasizing the deeply personal nature of the project.
“I wanted to write something about Canada because Canada is home,” Adams declared. “There is more that binds us than divides us.”
The “Summer of ’69” hitmaker continued by describing the track as “a tribute to the pride and spirit of my fellow Canadians,” adding that “the rest is just noise” regarding external political debates.
Lyric Analysis: A Direct Challenge
The protest anthem features several thinly-veiled direct references to Trump and his administration. Adams sings pointedly: “Let me give it to ya straight, When you’re talkin’ ’bout my home, You better show some respect, ‘Cause up here, we take care of our own.”
Further into the track, he delivers an even more explicit warning: “So let me give you some advice mister, You might have too much on your plate, go and load us up with tariffs, But we’ll never be the 51st state.”
The musician also accuses Trump of having “forgotten” how Canada has historically “stood beside” America “for that liberty we share,” before delivering an uplifting rallying cry celebrating Canadian resilience and independence.

Adams isn’t the only prominent Canadian figure to speak out against Trump’s rhetoric this year. Fellow Canadian musical icon Joni Mitchell made headlines earlier when she addressed the issue at the Juno Awards ceremony.
After receiving an award presented by Prime Minister Mark Mitchell, Mitchell addressed her fellow Canadians in the audience, stating: “I’m living in the States, and you know what’s happening there. This man (Carney) is a blessing. You guys are so fortunate.”
