The landscape of cult television is buzzing with speculation as fans of the iconic paranormal procedural The X-Files await the highly anticipated reboot helmed by director Ryan Coogler. Recent comments from the show’s original creator, Chris Carter, have added fuel to the fire, suggesting that the franchise’s legendary protagonists—Fox Mulder and Dana Scully—might make a comeback in this new iteration.

A Possible Reunion for Iconic Agents

Chris Carter recently provided a glimmer of hope during an interview with Polygon. While discussing the re-release of the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Carter was pressed on whether the original leads, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, would reprise their roles under Coogler’s creative vision.

“I believe Gillian is going to show up in the Coogler version, and I assume David will be there as well,” Carter remarked. While he stopped short of issuing an official casting confirmation, his comments provide the strongest indication yet that the faces most synonymous with the search for the truth may return to our screens. Carter was careful to note that he has not yet viewed Coogler’s work, meaning his comments reflect an expectation rather than a locked-in production deal.

Complementary Visions or Competition?

Beyond the potential for cameos, the broader question remains: how will this new project fit into the existing mythology of the series? Carter admitted that he remains uncertain whether Coogler’s reboot will operate as a standalone experience or intersect with the established history of the FBI’s X-Files division.

“Once I see the finished product, it will become clear to me, and to the executives at Fox, whether these two versions will compete for space or complement one another,” Carter explained. Regardless of the reboot’s direction, the creator made it clear that his own creative journey with the franchise is far from over. He expressed a strong desire to develop further entries—potentially a new film or a different series concept—noting that he has “big plans” for the future of the brand.

The Legacy and the Future

Since its explosive debut in 1993, The X-Files has captivated audiences with its blend of government conspiracies, extraterrestrial encounters, and the undeniable chemistry between its leads. Following its initial nine-season run, the show was revived for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. Over the decades, the franchise has expanded beyond television, spawning two feature films: The X-Files: Fight the Future and The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

As for Ryan Coogler, his plate remains incredibly full. While he crafts his vision for the world of paranormal investigations, he is also deep in development for Black Panther III. Slated for a December 2028 release, the project will feature David Jonsson as the adult version of T’Challa’s son, cementing Coogler’s status as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors.

While fans await a potential reunion, the enduring cultural footprint of The X-Files proves that Mulder and Scully’s legacy is as potent as ever—regardless of whether they ever return.
