Released on Amazon Prime Video on July 29, 2026, The Devil’s Mouth attempts to blend claustrophobic cave horror with the classic shark‑thriller formula. Directed by Jeff Wadlow and written by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner, the film drops five recent graduates into a flooded Thai cavern system where a blood‑thirsty bull shark stalks the darkness. While the setting offers genuine tension, the execution leans heavily on familiar beats, leaving the audience with a sense of déjà vu rather than genuine dread.

Synopsis

A group of friends—guided by local expert Wat—venture into the ominously named Devil’s Mouth cave after monsoon rains push saltwater wildlife into its brackish tunnels. Ignoring warnings to take the safer green route, they choose the advanced red passage. As oxygen dwindles and the cavern walls close in, the friends must navigate tight tunnels, argue over personal conflicts, and survive the sudden appearance of a relentless bull shark that turns their expedition into a fight for breath and life.

Performances

Kathryn Newton brings a steady resolve to Sara, the group’s de facto moral compass, portraying her isolation and determination with subtle nuance. Lana Condor’s Max oscillates between protective charm and domineering pressure, delivering a performance that hints at deeper insecurity beneath his confident façade. Nico Hiraga’s James serves as the cautious voice of reason, while Tommi Rose’s Adrienne and Gavin Casalegno’s Greg provide lighter moments that occasionally undercut the mounting tension. Tayme Thapthimthong’s Wat grounds the expedition with authentic local knowledge, though his role remains largely expository. Collectively, the cast manages to convey the strain of fraying friendships, even when the script limits their emotional range.

Behind the Lens

Jeff Wadlow’s direction leans on the cavern’s natural claustrophobia, using tight framing to amplify the sense of entrapment. Cinematographer James Kniest captures the murky beauty of the underground world—torchlight glinting off jagged stone, occasional bioluminescent pockets offering brief respite, and the oppressive gloom that swallows the characters whole.

The screenplay, however, struggles to balance character drama with shark action; the predator often feels like a plot device rather than a fully realized threat, its digital movements lacking weight and personality. Practical effects shine in the limited‑air sequences, where the struggle for breath feels visceral, but the shark attacks rely heavily on CGI that sometimes slips into unintentional slapstick. Editing repeats a predictable pattern—swim, argue, separate, lunge—undermining any potential for surprise.

Final Verdict

The Devil’s Mouth possesses all the ingredients for a gripping survival thriller: a hazardous environment, dwindling resources, and interpersonal conflict ready to explode. Unfortunately, the film assembles these parts in the most foreseeable order, allowing the audience to anticipate each beat long before it unfolds. While moments of genuine tension—particularly the extended flooded‑tunnel sequence—show what the picture could achieve, they are eclipsed by repetitive dialogue, unclear spatial geography, and a shark that never feels truly menacing. The result is a competent but forgettable entry in the genre, best suited for viewers who enjoy atmospheric cave scenes more than innovative predator storytelling.
