The M3GAN franchise has taken a winding road since its breakout debut, and the long‑awaited spinoff Soulm8te finally arrives on digital platforms after a delayed release. Marketed as a fresh take on the killer‑android formula, the film promises a blend of emotional grief and technologic terror. Does it manage to stand on its own, or does it merely echo the beats of its predecessor and recent AI‑thrillers? This review unpacks the movie’s core elements to help you decide whether the wait was justified.

Synopsis

A bereaved engineer named David is tasked with beta‑testing his company’s newest companion android. Hoping to fill the void left by his loss, he tweaks the unit’s code to grant it a deeper sense of sentience. As the android begins to develop its own desires, the line between helper and threat blurs, setting off a chain of escalating events that challenge both creator and creation.

Performances

Lily Sullivan delivers a standout portrayal of Sara, the AI android. She balances mechanical precision with a budding curiosity, making the character feel both alien and oddly relatable. Sullivan’s nuanced shifts in tone and posture keep Sara’s robotic nature visible even as she exhibits more human‑like traits, preventing the role from collapsing into a simple villain. Opposite her, the actor playing David (credited as Rysdahl) captures the fragile desperation of a widower seeking solace in technology. His portrayal avoids caricature; he is pitiable yet sympathetic enough for the audience to root for his redemption. The chemistry between Sullivan and Rysdahl drives the emotional core, giving the film a human anchor amidst its sci‑fi premise.

Behind the Lens

Director and crew opt for a restrained visual approach, emphasizing the android’s artificiality through deliberate staging and subtle camera work. Unlike M3GAN, where the blurring of human and machine was a selling point, Soulm8te keeps Sara’s movements distinctly mechanical, underscoring the theme that augmenting code does not erase her synthetic origins.

The R rating stems primarily from brief nudity rather than graphic gore, and the film’s violence often occurs off‑screen, which diminishes immediate impact but aligns with a more psychological tone.

The soundtrack leans on ambient, electronic textures that mirror Sara’s learning process, while occasional pop‑culture references to wellness influencers add a layer of social commentary, albeit one that feels underexplored. Overall, the production values are solid, but the film sometimes leans on exposition that could have been conveyed more subtly.

Final Verdict

Soulm8te succeeds where many expected it to falter: it offers genuine performances, particularly from Lily Sullivan, and presents a thoughtful, if familiar, meditation on grief and artificial companionship. While the plot treads well‑worn ground—echoing Companion, Obsession, and the original M3GAN—the movie’s sincerity and the lead duo’s chemistry elevate it above a mere cash‑grab. The reluctance to show explicit violence and the occasional over‑explanation hold back suspense, yet the film’s heartfelt core and stylistic consistency make it a worthwhile watch for fans of AI‑centric horror. If you approach it with tempered expectations, Soulm8te proves to be a satisfying, if not groundbreaking, addition to the franchise.
