Meryl Wilsner’s novel Cleat Cute captured the attention of #BookTok readers in 2023, quickly climbing to a USA TODAY bestseller spot. The story follows Grace, a veteran national‑team soccer star, and Phoebe, her eager new teammate, as they navigate rivalry, flirtation, and the high‑stakes chase for a World Cup roster position. The novel’s blend of sport, romance, and LGBTQ+ representation resonated strongly with audiences craving authentic queer narratives.

Recognizing the momentum, Prime Video announced in spring 2026 that it would develop a television adaptation. The project, now titled Playing the Field, aims to expand the intimate romance of the book into a broader ensemble comedy while keeping the core relationship between Grace and Phoebe as its emotional anchor.

Creative Leadership and Production Team

Showrunner Sarah Tapscott, known for her work on New Girl and The Sex Lives of College Girls, will helm Playing the Field as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Wilsner expressed enthusiasm over Tapscott’s involvement, noting her sharp humor and visionary approach after a brief Zoom meeting.

Beyond Tapscott, the series benefits from the athletic insight of former WNBA star Sue Bird and former USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe, both serving as executive producers. Additional producers include Jeff Wachtel, Jared Berenholz, Camille Bernier‑Green, Emily Rasenick, and Wilsner themselves. This blend of storytelling expertise and real‑world sports experience promises an authentic portrayal of life on and off the pitch.

Plot Expansion: From Duo to Ensemble

While Cleat Cute centers almost exclusively on Grace and Phoebe’s evolving connection, Playing the Field will widen its lens. According to Deadline, the show will use the couple’s tension‑filled dynamic as the “anchor” for a larger narrative that follows four different players navigating love, ambition, and personal growth on a collegiate‑level soccer team.

Wilsner explained that the shift from a novel to a series necessitated expansion rather than condensation. “Cleat Cute was specifically the story of Grace and Phoebe falling in love, and Playing the Field is an ensemble comedy,” she wrote on Facebook. The logline hints at a rotating focus each season, similar to the anthology feel of Off Campus, allowing fresh storylines while retaining the core quartet.

Casting Speculation and Fan Involvement

As of now, no official casting decisions have been made. Wilsner openly invited fan input, asking on social media, “Who do y’all have in mind?” Suggestions have already surfaced: Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets, Santa Clarita Diet) and Ella Purnell (Fallout, Sweetpea) are frequently mentioned for Phoebe, while Charlotte Austin (Petrichor) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) appear as top contenders for Grace.

The author emphasized her openness to creative liberties, stating that while Cleat Cute remains a beloved work, Playing the Field is not “her baby.” She looks forward to seeing how Tapscott and the team reinterpret the characters for a serialized format.

Timeline and Production Status

Although the adaptation was confirmed in April 2026, the series remains in early development. Scripts, outlines, and overall tone are being finalized, but full‑scale production has not yet begun. Wilsner described the timeline as “vague,” noting the many steps required to bring a television show to life. Industry observers estimate that, if casting commences later in 2027, a release could realistically arrive no earlier than 2028.

Why Playing the Field Matters

The move from page to screen underscores a growing appetite for queer‑centric sports romances across media. By placing a sapphic love story at the heart of a soccer‑driven ensemble, Prime Video aims to fill a gap in mainstream streaming offerings while celebrating the athleticism, camaraderie, and drama inherent to the sport.

For readers of Cleat Cute and newcomers alike, Playing the Field promises a fresh take on rivalry, romance, and the pursuit of dreams—both on the field and beyond.
