Apple TV+’s Shrinking may have slipped under your radar, but it stands out as one of 2023’s smartest, most heartfelt series. Created by Ted Lasso’s Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, this 10-episode first season premiered in January 2024 and leaves you laughing through tears as you watch therapists wrestle with their own traumas.

A Different Kind of Therapist

Jason Segel portrays Jimmy, a grief-stricken therapist whose wife passed away a year earlier. We first encounter him hosting a wild pool party—hardly an image you’d expect from a professional counselor. His strained relationship with teenage daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) reflects his inner turmoil. Yet, Jimmy continues to practice therapy alongside colleagues Gaby (Jessica Williams) and his mentor, Paul (Harrison Ford), in an office that’s anything but conventional.

Therapy or Psychological Vigilantism?

When Jimmy snaps under the weight of others’ problems, he abandons traditional methods and delivers blunt “solutions” straight to his clients. He proudly dubs himself a “psychological vigilante,” dispensing advice like “Leave him!” to Grace (Heidi Gardner) and “Take up boxing!” to Sean (Luke Tennis), a veteran struggling with PTSD. This reckless approach endangers his professional standing but sparks genuine breakthroughs. As Grace falls for Jimmy and Sean moves into his pool house, we witness the unexpected restoration of Jimmy’s purpose: rebuilding bonds with his daughter, reconnecting with old friend Brian (Michael Urie), and confronting his own grief.

The Heart of Connection

At its core, Shrinking celebrates human connection. Conversations—equal parts cringey, sincere, and hilarious—drive the narrative forward. The writing shines when characters reveal awkward confessions or trade sharp-witted retorts. This blend of humor and pathos could misfire without the cast’s chemistry, but Segel, Williams, Ford, and the ensemble elevate every scene.

Standout Performances

• Harrison Ford: In only his second TV role, Ford steals scenes with his dry sarcasm and sudden emotional depth. Whether he’s lounging in the office or nearly incapacitated by edibles, his Paul anchors the series.
• Jessica Williams: As Gaby, Jimmy’s late-wife’s best friend and a therapist in the throes of divorce, Williams balances warmth, vulnerability, and comic timing—quickly becoming the practice’s moral compass.
• Lukita Maxwell: Playing Alice, Maxwell captures a teenager forced to mature faster than her peers, offering poignant moments in informal sidewalk therapy sessions with Paul.
• Jason Segel: Segel makes the flawed Jimmy utterly likable. His raw portrayal of grief-driven recklessness and gradual redemption is both moving and uproarious.

Brevity and Balance

Each episode runs about 30 minutes, ensuring emotional moments never overstay their welcome. Directors like James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) and Ry Russo-Young (Before I Fall) expertly balance laughter and sincerity, so every scene feels fresh.

Why You Should Watch

Shrinking is an unlikely mix of workplace comedy, ensemble drama, and bittersweet life lesson. It reminds us that healing often begins when we share our feelings—and that sometimes the best therapy comes from the most unorthodox sources. Season 3 arrives January 28, 2026, so now is the perfect time to catch up on Seasons 1 and 2.

Whether you’re a fan of comedy-dramas or drawn to stories about grief and redemption, Shrinking deserves a spot at the top of your binge-list.
