Netflix has released a teaser for Empress of Flames, an ambitious retelling of a storied Thai legend about blood‑soaked revenge and the fight for a throne. The project reunites director Sivaroj Kongsakul and the team at Kantana Motion Pictures, who previously delivered the hit series Master of the House. This new venture promises a fresh perspective that digs deeper into the origins, motives, and emotional turmoil driving the conflict.
Plot & Setting
The story unfolds in the Thipaya Kingdom (Muang Thip), a realm governed for over three centuries by the Thipayawongse Dynasty. The dynasty’s rule ends when Queen Tawanthip—nicknamed the “Demonic Queen” for her ruthless brutality—is deposed by King Phuka, who establishes the Phuka Luang Dynasty and shows unexpected mercy by sparing the former royal line. Eighteen years later, the eldest heir of the deposed queen, Buraphakham, launches a bloody uprising that topples King Phuka and shatters the fragile peace.
Ananthip, the sole surviving descendant of King Phuka, loses everything and is forced into exile. Stripped of her status, she transforms from a compassionate princess into a calculating strategist, determined to restore honor to her family. Her quest for the throne is tangled with betrayal, love, and shifting alliances:
- Sekharathewi – a once‑beloved Thipayawongse heir turned implacable rival.
- Muang Khum – the man she loves, offering her a sanctuary amid chaos.
- Tongnual – a charismatic princess from the neighboring Kingdom of Meed, who wields wealth and charm as tools for power.
As Ananthip’s legitimacy is repeatedly challenged, she embraces the fire within, channeling a vengeful fury that threatens to consume everyone in her path to reclaim the crown.
Director’s Vision
Sivaroj Kongsakul approached Empress of Flames with a clean slate, having never watched any prior adaptations. He began with the original legend, focusing on the characters’ emotions, family ties, and personal journeys against the backdrop of the throne struggle. Kongsakul aimed to preserve the heart of the story while adding layers of depth—especially to the protagonists’ internal lives—so viewers can see each individual’s motivations, wounds, and the forces propelling their quest for revenge.
Cast Preparations
Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul, who portrays Ananthip, undertook extensive preparation to capture the character’s duality. She explored new acting dimensions, attended workshops, and consulted closely with the director. Her goal is to reveal not only Ananthip’s strength and resilience but also her loneliness, grief, and the internal struggle that drives her to fight.
Narilya Gulmongkolpech, playing Sekharathewi, emphasized the princess’s gentle upbringing contrasted with an inner steadfastness. Through coaching and collaborative workshops, she uncovered unexpected emotions that allowed her to shape a version of Sekharathewi that feels both familiar and refreshingly distinct.
Khemanit Jamikorn, embodying Queen Tawanthip, highlighted the character’s complexity—beauty intertwined with violence—and noted that the series will gradually unveil the reasons behind her destructive reign, giving audiences a nuanced view of power and its consequences.
Production Design & Costumes
The production team built an entirely new world for Empress of Flames, crafting a detailed map that outlines each city’s geography, lifestyle, and history. Costumes vary by location, reflecting distinct cultural influences while blending fantasy with Southeast Asian aesthetics. Costume designer Rattanarat Aurthaveekul explained that the team drew from a broad Asian visual library, avoiding direct replication of any single nation to create unique, imaginative attire that underscores each character’s origin and identity.
Notably, the throne room of the Thipaya Kingdom was constructed from scratch, its design intended to convey both the dominance of those seated above and the subjugation of those kneeling beneath its power. Large ensemble scenes further enrich the fantasy setting, bringing the kingdom’s bustling courts and stark battlefields to life.

Empress of Flames premieres worldwide on December 3, exclusively on Netflix. The series promises to deliver an intense blend of revenge, political intrigue, and human emotion, inviting viewers to experience a legendary Thai tale reborn for a global audience.
