Since its debut on AMC in 2010, The Walking Dead has evolved from a single cable drama into a sprawling multimedia franchise. Over the past decade, Netflix has served as the exclusive U.S. streaming home for the original series, while a growing roster of spinoffs and specials has expanded the undead narrative far beyond its comic‑book roots. The latest development signals a new chapter: a five‑year, co‑exclusive arrangement that places the entire Walking Dead universe on both Netflix and AMC+ starting in January 2027.

Deal Details

According to DiscussingFilm, Netflix has renewed its rights to stream every show within the Walking Dead mythos. The refreshed agreement spans five additional years and is valued at roughly $500 million. Under the terms, Netflix and AMC Global Media will jointly license the following titles:

  • The Walking Dead (original series)
  • Fear the Walking Dead
  • The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
  • The Walking Dead: Dead City
  • The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
  • The Walking Dead: World Beyond
  • Tales of The Walking Dead

Collectively, these seven series comprise 371 episodes produced over 15 years of television. The deal also preserves existing streaming windows in regions where current contracts remain active, allowing individual series to appear on each platform as those licenses expire.

Territorial Expansion

A notable aspect of the renewal is the geographic expansion of Netflix’s catalog. Beginning in 2027, the franchise will become available in the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand—markets that previously lacked comprehensive access to the full slate of Walking Dead content. This move aligns with Netflix’s strategy to bolster its international library with proven, globally recognized properties.

Impact on AMC+

For the first time, AMC+ will carry the original The Walking Dead series. While the show has resided on Netflix since 2011, the co‑exclusive framework grants AMC’s own streaming service a share of the flagship title starting in 2027. Subsequent spinoffs will also appear on AMC+ as their respective licensing windows close, creating a unified destination for fans who prefer the network’s platform.

Executive Perspectives

Lori Conkling, Vice President of Licensing at Netflix, emphasized the enduring appeal of the franchise:

“Audiences have discovered and loved The Walking Dead on Netflix for nearly 15 years and the show continues to attract new fans. The partnership will continue to expand that access to more audiences around the world.”

AMC Global Media CEO Kristin Dolan echoed the sentiment, describing the agreement as “a fantastic result for our companies, for the fans, and for this timeless IP.” She highlighted that the co‑exclusive model creates “a global destination for this universe” with all shows and episodes consolidated in one place. The announcement coincided with AMC raising its full‑year revenue guidance to between $2.4 billion and $2.45 billion, citing the streaming deal as a key contributor.

What This Means for Fans

Long‑time viewers now enjoy unprecedented flexibility. Those who have relied solely on Netflix can continue to binge the entire catalog without interruption, while AMC+ subscribers gain entry to the original series for the first time. The staggered rollout—based on existing regional agreements—ensures a smooth transition, minimizing disruption while maximizing reach.

From a cultural standpoint, the deal reinforces the notion that a well‑crafted narrative can sustain relevance long after its televised finale. By locking the franchise into two major streaming hubs for half a decade, both Netflix and AMC signal confidence in the undead saga’s ability to draw new generations of fans.

Netflix and AMC Unite

The renewed Netflix‑AMC partnership marks a significant milestone in streaming history. With a half‑billion‑dollar investment, a five‑year horizon, and an expanded global footprint, The Walking Dead universe is poised to remain a cornerstone of on‑demand entertainment. Whether viewers prefer the familiarity of Netflix or the emerging offerings of AMC+, the undead saga will be readily accessible—proof that even in a post‑apocalyptic world, great stories find ways to survive.
