In what is called as the first big step in the world to revolutionize the streaming experience, the popular digital platform of India, MX Player has become the first one to upgrade the video encoding and compression technology to the most advanced H.226 VVC (Versatile Video Coding) which slashes the usage of data by half. This technology is a boon for the audience as the data consumption will be lower when watching their favorite shows, series or films across the OTT channel. MX TakaTak users are also going to benefit immensely from this technology which goes a long way in cutting the data costs.

MX Player with over 200 Million active subscribers and India which is in the forefront with 80% online video consumption in the world has grown exponentially in recent times due to the onslaught of Covid-19 pandemic, the H.266 upgrade by MX Player will start a new era in video streaming.

The video streams will be faster with less buffering time as only half or less data is required with H.266 and MX Player users will now be able to stream more content with less data and network bandwidth. For instance, a HD video of 25 mins duration, it takes 164.91 MB for all other OTTs but it takes just 51.72 MB to stream it on H.266 enabled MX Player.

H.266/VVC is the world’s most advanced video codec designed to succeed H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC used by most of the streaming video services worldwide today. The H.266 upgrade makes MX Player the first OTT platform in the world to deploy this technology.

Karan Bedi, CEO, MX Player and MX TakaTak said, “Video consumption dominates internet usage wherever you go across India, but the quality of experience deteriorates in areas with inconsistent data networks. The new standard is an opportunity for MX Player to give millions of users, regardless of where they are, an exceptional streaming experience that allows them to consume content the way content creators intended: faster loading, buffering-free, and true-to-life HD quality.”

Sidd Mantri, SVP Product, MX Player further added, “At MX Player, the future is now. We relentlessly focus on raising the customer experience bar for Indian users. We were amongst the 1st few OTTs to deploy AV1 that reduced data consumption by 20-30% compared to H.265. With H.266, we are taking it to the next level. H.266 offers the most advanced video compression standard available in the world and reduces data usage by more than 50%. Many users in India live on daily data consumption caps, so with H.266 they can watch more as well as watch better on MX Player.”

In simple words, its like the switching of mobile technology from 3G to 4G and to 5G off late which enhance the user experience. Similarly, this big technology leap by MX Player will rewrite the experience of the viewers by giving them more value for their money and ensure that they get superior quality output from MX Player and MX TakaTak all over the world.
