The first season was a gritty story of lawless Mirzapur where Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) is the king. His rash and hot-headed son Munna (Divyendu Sharma) is power-hungry and wants to sit at the throne even at the expense of killing his father. In doing so, he ends up shooting some of his most loyal comrades, Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) and Bablu (Vikrant Massey) and ends up killing several innocent souls.
Story-line
Season 2 of Mirzapur picks up right from the climax of the first season. Munna has made new enemies after his killing spree at a wedding. Guddu Pandit and Golu (Shweta Tripathi Sharma) are out there, healing their wounds as well as preparing a strategy for revenge.
Golu leaves behind her dreams of studying and takes up a rifle to dominate the world of men. She becomes a friend, fighter, and role model.
At the Tripathi household, Beena (Rasika Dugal) is tied in a sexual tension among men fighting for power. She forges her survival plan amidst the chaos.
Beena and Babuji (KulbhushanKharbanda) both keep their tensed chemistry alive. They play mind games and watch their plan unfold in a composed manner.
After a series of fights and lost lives, the tale ends in a therapeutic manner and paves the way for another season.
Performances
Pankaj Tripathi shows once again that he has mastered the art of acting to the hilt. His calm and poised stature in an anarchic society deserves special mention.
Fazal displayed the intensity and emotions of Guddu with great ease as he transforms into a more perfect goon and wounded tiger after first season as his motive and mission of revenge becoming more crystal clear.
No other actor would’ve done justice to the role of Munna other than Divyendu. His impulsive decision and disruptive nature make him the perfect villain. However, this season shows that Munna has a tinge of humanity left in him but it gets squashed by his evil dictator persona.
Behind the scenes
Gurmmeet Singh succeeds in creating a poised story in a town where killing mercilessly for power, love, and money is the new normal.
The background score by John Stewart Eduri is outstanding and it remains a highlight for this season too.
Puneet Krishna and Karan Anshuman weaved a jarring tale of ruthlessness and savagery that keeps you hooked at the edge of your seat.
Verdict & Rating
This season has introduced several new characters who fuel the feud and create a new sense of competition in a delinquent town. One of the most notable features about this season is women take charge of their fate. They lash out, kill, prey, and play striking mind games and surpass the masochist men. Obviously, a knockout change from the first season.
At times, it seems like the directors have faltered to tie up the knots properly after introducing a plethora of characters. But if you want to see a gripping story full of drama and complex relationships, Mirzapur is the right one for you which is the poignant revenge tale of a blood-soaked town. This season is watch-worthy beyond any doubt.
