The global television landscape was transformed when a modern gentleman thief first graced our screens, and now the wait for his return is nearly over. Lupin has solidified its place as a cornerstone of Netflix’s international library, and the streaming giant has finally begun pulling back the curtain on the next chapter. Omar Sy is set to step back into the long coat of Assane Diop, the master of disguise who captured the imagination of millions across the globe.
Actor Omar Sy, who also serves as a co-writer alongside Louis Leterrier, has described the character of Assane as an incredible creative playground. The excitement surrounding the production reached a fever pitch recently with the debut of a new official trailer and promotional imagery. These early glimpses suggest that the upcoming fourth part will introduce some of the most shocking narrative developments in the series to date.
A Global Streaming Powerhouse
Since its initial launch, Lupin—which draws heavy inspiration from the classic literary adventures of the thief created by Maurice Leblanc—has been a juggernaut for Netflix. By blending high-stakes action with a sophisticated, intellectual edge, the show quickly ascended the global charts. It holds the distinction of being one of the most successful productions to emerge from France, resonating with viewers through its blend of classic charm and contemporary social themes.
The statistical success of the show is staggering. Upon its debut, it became the most-watched non-English language series on the platform. The first three installments remain staples of the all-time top ten rankings on Netflix, with the inaugural season alone garnering more than 70 million views within its first few weeks. This momentum has shown no signs of slowing down, as the third part topped charts in numerous countries, including Italy and the United States.
The Twist: A Battle of Identities
When we last saw Assane Diop at the conclusion of the third part, he was behind bars. While fans are eager to see how he handles incarceration, the new trailer suggests he won’t be staying put for long. The most startling revelation from the new footage is the emergence of an impostor. Assane must now contend with a shadow figure who has stolen his identity and is operating under his name.
Season four is expected to chronicle Assane’s escape from prison—likely executed with his trademark brilliance—and his subsequent hunt for this fake thief. Beyond the immediate threat of the impostor, the story is poised to dive deeper into the Diop family history. There are hints that new secrets regarding Assane’s lineage and the true motivations behind the Pellegrini family’s vendetta will finally come to light.
A Refresher on the Journey So Far
The saga began with Assane seeking justice for his father, Babakar Diop, who was framed for a crime he did not commit by the wealthy Hubert Pellegrini. By utilizing the tactics of his literary hero, Assane exposed the rot within the elite circles of Paris. The second season heightened the stakes, forcing Assane into a life of a fugitive while trying to shield his family from the fallout of his crusade.
The third season took a more introspective turn. A vulnerable Assane tried to make amends for the chaos his lifestyle caused his loved ones. After a series of daring heists, including the theft of a legendary pearl and a faked death to protect his mother, he realized that true safety for his family required his own surrender. He ended the season by turning himself over to the authorities, setting the stage for the dramatic events of the upcoming installment.
