The search for the next James Bond has been one of Hollywood’s most closely guarded secrets since Daniel Craig hung up his tuxedo. While numerous heavyweights have been linked to the sought-after role, an exciting new frontrunner has emerged from the shadows of the cinematic espionage world. Jack Lowden, widely praised to be among the finest talents of his generation, is reportedly under serious consideration to step into the shiny shoes of the world’s most famous secret agent. If he secures the part, he will make history as the first Scottish actor to portray 007 since the legendary Sean Connery.

This thrilling development comes alongside news of the actor landing another legendary literary figure. Jack Lowden is set to portray the brooding Mr. Darcy in the upcoming six-part television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice on Netflix, which is currently slated for a 2026 release. With a license to charm already under his belt, transitioning to a license to kill seems like a natural next step for the rising star.

The Podcast Revelation That Sparked the Rumors

The whisper network surrounding the 007 casting process went into overdrive following comments made by author and television presenter Richard Osman. Speaking on his popular podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, which he co-hosts with Marina Hyde, Richard Osman shared an intriguing piece of industry insider information. He revealed that a reliable source had named Jack Lowden as a major contender for the role.

While Richard Osman was careful to clarify that nothing is set in stone just yet, he emphasized that the actor is being highly prioritized by producers. He explained that it is not a finalized contract, but rather a situation where Jack Lowden is under very strong consideration. Richard Osman expressed immense enthusiasm for the potential casting, noting that the Scottish actor possesses a raw intensity and presence reminiscent of Daniel Craig.

A Historic Casting and an Impressive Resume

If Jack Lowden is chosen, his casting would mark a monumental moment for the franchise. He would be the first Scotsman to play James Bond since Sean Connery, who defined the cinematic version of the character across seven films from 1962 to 1971, and once more in the 1983 movie Never Say Never Again.

Beyond the historical significance, Jack Lowden has already proven his spy credentials to global audiences. He is best known for his portrayal of the young, ambitious MI5 officer River Cartwright in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series Slow Horses. His performance in the hit show has earned him widespread praise for balancing vulnerability with grit. His versatile filmography also includes standout performances in Christopher Nolan’s epic war movie Dunkirk, the intense survival thriller Calibre, the sports comedy Fighting with My Family, and the BBC drama series The Gold.

The Road to the Next Bond Film

The competition for the role remains incredibly fierce. Names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jacob Elordi, Theo James, Henry Cavill, and James Norton continue to dominate fan casting discussions. However, the decision-makers behind the franchise appear to be taking their time to find the perfect fit.

Audiences might not have to wait too much longer for an official announcement. Franchise producer Amy Pascal recently hinted that the identity of the new 007 could be unveiled before the end of 2026, suggesting that late autumn or winter would be a strong bet for the big reveal.

The upcoming installment is currently eyeing a theatrical release in 2028. Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is reportedly attached to direct, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is tasked with writing the screenplay. Reports indicate that the audition process kicked off earlier this year in May, with subsequent casting calls scheduled to refine the search for cinema’s ultimate secret agent.
