After a theatrical run that brought the iconic 1980s toy line back to the big screen, fans now have the opportunity to revisit or discover the legendary world of Eternia from the comfort of their homes. Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced that Masters of the Universe will make its digital debut on Prime Video on July 22.
A Modern Take on a Retro Classic
The latest live-action adaptation marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which originated from Mattel’s imaginative toy line in 1982. While the brand has enjoyed decades of success through various animated series and pop-culture appearances, this film represents only the second time the property has been adapted for live-action cinema. The first attempt, released in 1987, famously starred Dolph Lundgren as the iconic warrior.
This new iteration successfully bridges the gap between nostalgia and modern cinematic spectacle. By updating the aesthetics of fan-favorite characters while honoring the core narrative that has captivated audiences for generations, the production team has crafted an experience that appeals to both long-time devotees and newcomers alike.
The Stars of Eternia
At the heart of the film is Nicholas Galitzine, who takes on the mantle of Adam, known to the world as He-Man. His performance captures the internal struggle of a hero tasked with protecting his home planet, Eternia, against its most malevolent threat: Skeletor, portrayed with menacing intensity by Jared Leto.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, adding significant weight to the action. Camila Mendes steps into the role of the fierce warrior Teela, while Idris Elba provides a commanding presence as the tech-savvy Man-at-Arms. The ensemble is rounded out by a talented roster of actors, including Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Charlotte Riley, Morena Baccarin, Artie Wilkinson-Hunt, and Eire Farrell.

Initially stalled in development hell while moving between major studios, including Netflix, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures, the film finally found its home when Amazon MGM secured the rights in 2024. With a reported production budget of approximately $200 million, the film stands as one of the most ambitious fantasy projects of the year.

Following its theatrical debut on June 5, Masters of the Universe saw a respectable opening weekend in North America, pulling in $29.3 million. Although it claimed the second spot at the box office behind the horror hit Scary Movie, the film maintained a consistent presence in theaters. Now, with its upcoming transition to Prime Video, the movie is expected to reach a broader global audience, further solidifying the revival of this legendary franchise.
