Amazon MGM Studios has unleashed the haunting first look at its upcoming cinematic adaptation of Verity, the blockbuster novel by Colleen Hoover. The newly released teaser preview establishes a starkly dark and suspenseful tone, signaling a significant departure from previous film versions of Hoover’s work. The film is slated for a theatrical debut on October 2, 2026.
A Sinister Premise Unfolds
Helmed by director Michael Showalter, Verity centers on Lowen Ashleigh, a writer facing professional struggles, portrayed by Dakota Johnson. She is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) to complete the immensely popular book series begun by his wife, Verity (Anne Hathaway), who was left severely incapacitated after a tragic accident.
To immerse herself in the work, Lowen moves into the secluded Crawford family home. What begins as a simple writing assignment quickly spirals into a waking nightmare when she discovers a hidden, unfinished autobiography penned by Verity herself. The manuscript is not a simple memoir but a trove of terrifying confessions that cast a sinister shadow over Verity’s life as a mother and wife, revealing deeply disturbing truths.
A Descent into “Gothic Psychosexual” Terror
Debuted at CinemaCon and released publicly on April 28, 2026, the teaser firmly embraces what producers describe as a “gothic psychosexual” atmosphere. The footage masterfully builds a palpable sense of dread and paranoia. It outlines the fragile, complicated dynamic blossoming between Lowen and Jeremy, hinting at a romance fraught with underlying suspicion.
In one particularly unsettling moment, a passionate kiss between Lowen and Jeremy is subverted, with Jeremy’s face morphing into Verity’s, who looks on with a knowing and sinister smile. The tension escalates to violence when Verity—previously thought to be completely helpless—viciously attacks Lowen, biting her hard enough to draw blood. The teaser culminates with Lowen’s ominous voiceover declaration: “I’m going to take it from you. All of it.”
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Alongside the powerhouse leads Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, the project stars Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Brady Wagner as the Crawfords’ son, Crew, and podcaster Alex Cooper in an undisclosed role. Author Colleen Hoover also takes an active role behind the camera as a producer on the project, ensuring the adaptation remains true to the novel’s unsettling spirit.
With its layered narrative, atmospheric tension, and shocking twists, Verity is poised to be a standout, darker entry in the canon of bestselling book adaptations, offering audiences a profoundly psychological and visceral thriller experience.
