Netflix is set to expand its thriller catalog with an adaptation that promises to leave viewers checking their locks. The streamer has unveiled the trailer of The Whisper Man, a chilling psychological crime drama based on the acclaimed bestselling novel by Alex North. Directed by James Ashcroft, the film explores the terrifying intersection of a cold case and a present-day abduction.
A Rhyme Turned Reality
The narrative hook of The Whisper Man centers on a disturbing nursery rhyme: “If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.” This unsettling line serves as the foundation for a story where childhood innocence is threatened by a predatory shadow.
The plot follows Tom Kennedy, portrayed by Adam Scott, a grieving widower and author whose life turns into a living nightmare when his young son is kidnapped. Faced with the unimaginable, Tom reaches out to his estranged father, Pete Willis—a role brought to life by legendary actor Robert De Niro. As a retired detective, Willis is haunted by the past, eventually uncovering a link between his grandson’s disappearance and the infamous crimes of a serial killer known as the “Whisper Man,” who preyed on victims decades ago.
Navigating Generational Trauma
Beyond the high-stakes investigation, the film serves as a character study of a fractured father-son bond. Forced to work together, Tom and Pete must confront the damage in their relationship while digging into a dark history they both assumed was long buried.
Alex North, the author behind the source material, expressed his enthusiasm for the adaptation, noting to Netflix’s Tudum that the film successfully captures the primal fear of a stranger attempting to influence a child. “It’s an inherently frightening idea,” North shared. “It works really, really well in the film.”
A Stellar Creative Team
Director James Ashcroft, known for his work on Coming Home in the Dark and The Rule of Jenny Pen, brings his signature tension to this adaptation. The screenplay, penned by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer, weaves together a complex narrative anchored by Michelle Monaghan’s performance, alongside supporting actors Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill.
The production marks a significant milestone for AGBO, the production company led by Anthony and Joe Russo, as it represents their sixth collaboration with Netflix. Alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting, the team has worked to ensure that The Whisper Man functions as both a pulse-pounding thriller and a deeply moving story regarding the complexities of family legacy.

For fans of psychological suspense, the wait is almost over. The Whisper Man is scheduled to make its global debut on Netflix on August 28.
