The bustling theatrical landscape of London’s West End is poised for a significant new arrival as celebrated Hollywood actress Teri Hatcher prepares to command the stage. Known for her memorable roles in hit television series, Hatcher is set to assume the formidable character of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, beginning her highly anticipated run on October 20. She will succeed the talented Vanessa Williams in what promises to be a captivating new chapter for the production.

Stepping into Iconic Heels

Hatcher, a veteran performer at 61, is embarking on a transatlantic move from Los Angeles to London to fully immerse herself in this pivotal role. The character of Miranda Priestly, the sharp-tongued, influential editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, is not merely a part; it’s a cultural touchstone. Hatcher’s decision to embrace this challenge underscores her commitment to dynamic storytelling and her passion for live performance. The transition into such a demanding character, especially one so deeply etched in public consciousness, is a testament to her versatile acting prowess.

During a recent interview with HELLO! magazine amidst a photoshoot in Paris, Hatcher articulated her enthusiasm for this new artistic endeavor. She revealed that this opportunity feels like a profound personal and professional culmination, allowing her to infuse the character with a wealth of life experiences and personal growth. “I’ve experienced and grown so much, and I get to bring all of that into my Devil Wears Prada performance,” she shared, emphasizing her excitement to explore a new facet of her identity through the role.

A Personal Journey to the West End

The allure of the West End was not Hatcher’s alone; her daughter, Emerson, 28, played a significant role in encouraging her mother to accept the part. Having already witnessed Vanessa Williams’s performance at the Dominion Theatre, Emerson’s ringing endorsement was a powerful motivator. “She saw Vanessa in it and said it was great, so when the opportunity came my way she was the first person to say: ‘Oh my god, you have to do it, you’re going to have so much fun,'” Hatcher recounted. This personal connection highlights the generational appeal of The Devil Wears Prada narrative and the familial joy surrounding Hatcher’s latest venture.

Despite not yet seeing the London production herself, Hatcher is thoroughly preparing for her debut. A self-professed “huge fan” of Lauren Weisberger’s original 2003 novel and the beloved 2006 film adaptation, she brings a deep appreciation for the source material. Her preparation includes engaging with key members of the current cast and crew, having already connected with Vanessa Williams and Matt Henry, who portrays Miranda’s colleague Nigel. This collaborative approach ensures a seamless transition and a respectful handover of the character.

From Screen Star to Stage Veteran

While Teri Hatcher is widely recognized for her memorable television roles, such as Susan Mayer in Desperate Housewives and Lois Lane in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, her theatrical roots run deep. Her career spans beyond the camera, showcasing a robust background in musical theatre. Over the years, she has graced the stage in several notable productions, demonstrating her vocal and acting range. Her past credits include playing Sally Bowles in the national tour of Sam Mendes’s acclaimed revival of Cabaret and embodying the iconic Morticia Addams in The Addams Family. This extensive stage experience positions her perfectly to tackle the complex demands of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.

The Phenomenon of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical

The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical brings to life the captivating story of Andrea Sachs, an aspiring journalist who inadvertently lands a coveted position as a junior assistant to the notoriously demanding Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine. The musical delves into the cutthroat world of high fashion, exploring themes of ambition, sacrifice, and self-discovery. With an original score featuring music by the legendary Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, and a book by Kate Wetherhead, the production is a vibrant spectacle. It is brought to the stage by a stellar production team, including Kevin McCollum, David Furnish, and Jamie Wilson.

The musical embarked on its journey with a successful try-out engagement at Theatre Royal Plymouth in the summer of 2024. Following critical acclaim and strong audience reception, it seamlessly transferred to its current London home, the majestic Dominion Theatre, where it officially opened in December 2024. Since its West End debut, The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical has captivated audiences, selling over 1.2 million tickets and solidifying its status as a major theatrical success. The production is set to celebrate its impressive 800th performance on September 23, further underscoring its enduring popularity.

Looking Ahead

As Teri Hatcher prepares to step into the designer shoes of Miranda Priestly, the London run of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical continues to draw in theatre-goers. The show is currently booked at the Dominion Theatre through September 25, 2027, offering ample opportunity for audiences to experience this glamorous and poignant production. Hatcher’s debut promises to inject fresh energy into the beloved character, inviting both long-time fans and new audiences to witness a compelling interpretation of the ultimate fashion empress.
