Integrated townships and the housing societies consists of many different people with distinct mindsets and attitudes. The web series Sunflower streaming now on Zee5 stands as a witness to the series of bizarre incidents and amusing behaviours of quirky people in its Mumbai cooperative housing society.

Story

A resident Raj Kapoor (Ashwin Kaushal) gets murdered in Sunflower Housing Society and majority of the residents along with the visitors find themselves in the suspected list.  But the needle of suspicion strongly points towards Sonu Singh (Sunil Grover) and the cops Digendra (Ranvir Shorey) and Chetan Tambe (Girish Kulkarni) launch the investigation by treating Sonu Singh as the prime suspect in the case.

Meanwhile, the investigation gets more complicated as new people and new suspects enter the scene making this murder mystery a laugh riot all through with many skeletons tumbling out of cupboards at regular intervals.

Performances

The ensemble star cast who portray the characters with eccentric personalities prove a point in the whole series. But Sunil Grover was the pick among the all who has put forth a highly convincing performance as a loner with a sassy sense of humour.

The others, Ranvir Shorey, Girish Kulkarni as investigating officers too contribute their might while Mukul Chadda and Radha Bhatt as the neighbours of the deceased and Ashish Vidyarthi as the President of Housing Society were highly impressive.

Dayana Erapa as Justina, the neighbour of Sonu and Simran Nerurakar have come up with splendid performances that added more radiance to Sunflower.

Behind the scenes

The fine tuning done by the director Vikas Bahl along with the co-writers Chaitali Parmar and Rahul Sengupta turning a whodunit murder mystery into a hilarious entertainer was commendable.

The presentation of characters and extracting comedy from these eccentric characters amidst some tense moments made Sunflower thoroughly enjoyable. Full credit goes to Vikas for the well defined character arcs and presenting them in right hue and shape.

In addition, the music composition by Sahej Bakshi and Sarvesh Shrivastava added more liveliness to the narrative.

The cinematography of Sudhakar Yakkanti Reddy was also praiseworthy in the sense that it enhanced the glint of Sunflower.

Final Verdict

Notwithstanding the fact that the main theme of a murder mystery revolving around eccentric characters packed with loads of hilarious moments has got diluted on the whole, Sunflower keeps the viewers hooked all through the eight episodes by crisp screenplay and immaculate execution. Though it got dragged a bit at some places, Sunflower provides wholesome enjoyment which is much needed during these times.
