Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first trailer for the sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling as an astronaut. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie is scheduled to be released on March 20, 2026. The production team includes producers Amy Pascal, Ryan Gosling, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Andy Weir. The adapted screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, based on Andy Weir’s novel. Weir is also the author of The Martian, which inspired the film starring Matt Damon. Drew Goddard will serve as an executive producer alongside his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg and Ken Kao.
Project Hail Mary was shot for IMAX, featuring a cast led by Gosling as well as Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. The story follows science teacher Ryland Grace (played by Gosling), who wakes up aboard a spaceship light years from Earth with no memory of his identity or how he arrived. As his recollections return, he discovers that his mission is to solve the mystery behind a strange substance threatening the sun’s survival. Using his scientific expertise and unconventional thinking, he must prevent Earth’s extinction. Along the way, an unexpected friendship offers support, ensuring he may not face this challenge alone. In the trailer, Gosling’s character emphasizes that although he is not an astronaut, his PhD in Molecular Biology equips him to find solutions to the planet’s crisis, leading to a groundbreaking revelation during his mission.
