Oscars 2027: Academy Unveils Groundbreaking Rulebook Overhaul
In preparation for its centennial celebration, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has enacted its most significant set of rule modifications in years. The updates for the 99th Academy Awards, set for March 14, 2027, target key areas including acting nominations, the International Feature Film category, and the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
A New Era for Acting Nominations
In a move that celebrates artistic versatility, the Academy has eliminated a longstanding limitation. Actors can now receive multiple nominations in the same category within a single year if they star in more than one eligible film. This change ensures that a standout performance will no longer be overlooked simply because an actor had another exceptional role the same season.
Historical examples like Sebastian Stan or Kate Winslet, who might have been nominated for two leading roles in the past, highlight the positive impact of this shift. This rule also aims to reduce “category fraud,” where a lead performance is submitted as supporting to circumvent the previous restriction.
Furthermore, the Academy has firmly defined eligible performances. Citing films like the upcoming As Deep as the Grave, featuring Val Kilmer, new rules state that only “roles credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent will be considered,” officially barring posthumous AI-resurrected performances.
International Film Category Transformed
The International Feature Film category receives a comprehensive update designed to promote inclusivity and recognize directorial vision.
- Multiple Entries: For the first time, more than one film from a single country can qualify for a nomination.
- Festival Pathway: A new automatic qualification route is established. Any non-English-language film that wins a top prize at one of six major festivals—Berlin, Busan, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, or Venice—will instantly become eligible. This is a major win for filmmakers like Jafar Panahi, whose work may not be submitted by their home country’s committee.
- Director-Centric Recognition: The Oscar trophy will now bear the name of the winning film’s director, shifting the honor from the submitted country to the creative force behind the project.
Taking a Firm Stand Against Artificial Intelligence
Addressing one of the industry’s most pressing debates, the Academy has drawn a clear line in the sand regarding AI. In the Writing categories, screenplays must be authored by humans to be eligible for consideration. The Academy also reserves the right to investigate the “use and extent of human authorship” in any submitted film. For the acting categories, any performance enhanced by AI will be disqualified.
Additional Refinements Across the Board
Other notable tweaks include increasing the number of Oscars awarded for the new Casting category from two to three. The Cinematography branch will now have a fixed shortlist of 20 films for preliminary voting. Eligibility rules for Original Song have been clarified to depend on the song’s placement within the end credits, requiring a clip that shows its context. For the final Visual Effects voting round, all members must view the mandatory “before and after” reels.
These sweeping changes mark the Academy’s commitment to evolving with the art form it celebrates, ensuring the Oscars remain relevant and authoritative for its next 100 years.
