Korean entertainment continues to captivate global audiences, and Netflix is doubling down with two highly anticipated original productions. The streaming platform has announced new details about Messily Ever After, a romantic comedy bringing together beloved actors from Pachinko, alongside Ma Teresa, a psychological thriller marking a compelling collaboration between two rising stars. These announcements signal Netflix’s continued investment in diverse Korean content that ranges from heartwarming romances to mind-bending psychological narratives.

Production Officially Begins on Netflix Romantic Comedy Messily Ever After

The creation of Messily Ever After is officially underway, with filming having commenced on May 12, 2026, following an initial delay from the originally planned February start date. Spring Breeze Film Company is producing this anticipated romantic comedy, which has undergone a title change from its working title Starlight to the current Messily Ever After. Director Seo Jung Min, renowned for the acclaimed series Let’s Eat, is at the helm of this project, bringing his signature style of nuanced character-driven storytelling to a romantic comedy setting.

The narrative centers on Su-hyun and Hyun-tae, two characters whose love story begins on the grounds of an art school where they experience an instant connection. What follows is a decade-long relationship characterized by intense passion on both sides of the emotional spectrum, as the couple navigates the complex reality of long-term romance. Rather than romanticizing relationships, this production explores the authentic mixture of devotion, frustration, attraction, and uncertainty that emerges when two people truly know each other. The synopsis promises audiences an experience filled with emotional highs and lows, capturing the paradox of loving someone deeply while simultaneously being driven to the edge of irritation.

The Dynamic Cast Behind This Highly Anticipated Romance

Kim Min Ha takes on the leading role of Su-hyun, portraying a curator whose professional life exemplifies perfect control and meticulous organization. However, when matters of the heart and feelings of jealousy arise, this composed professional finds herself completely unraveled. The role represents an interesting departure for the actress, who previously graced Netflix screens in Typhoon Family and is set to appear in the upcoming series Dead-End Job. Her most notable accomplishments include remarkable performances in Pachinko, Light Shop, and Not Alright But It’s Alright, demonstrating her range across various genres.

Noh Sang Hyun plays Hyun-tae, an installation artist who serves as Su-hyun’s long-term romantic partner. His character brings a different energy to the relationship, approaching both his craft and his personal connections with unwavering passion and firm principles. Noh Sang Hyun has built an impressive Netflix portfolio through Genie, Make a Wish and Behind Every Star, while also headlining numerous Korean drama series including Soundtrack 2, 300-Year-Old Class of 2020, and We Are Peaceful Brothers. His ability to portray complex, emotionally layered characters makes him an ideal fit for the multifaceted Hyun-tae.

Roh Jae Won rounds out the primary cast, a familiar face to Netflix audiences following his memorable performance as Nma Gyu (Number 124) in seasons two and three of Squid Game. His additional Netflix credits include Can This Love Be Translated, A Killer Paradox, Daily Dose of Sunshine, and DP. The production team has also announced his involvement in the upcoming season of All of Us Are Dead, suggesting his star continues to rise within the Korean entertainment industry.

What to Expect from the Release Timeline

Given that filming commenced in mid-May 2026 with an expected conclusion that same month, a release before late 2026 appears unlikely. Industry insiders anticipate that subscribers can expect to find Messily Ever After on Netflix during the first half of 2027, allowing adequate time for post-production work that will likely include the careful editing and localization processes required for global release.

Ma Teresa: A Psychological Thriller Exploring Power and Genius

Netflix is simultaneously developing Ma Teresa, a psychological thriller that promises to deliver intense dramatic performances and a sophisticated narrative exploring themes of power, revenge, and intellectual brilliance. The series has attracted attention not only for its premise but also for the caliber of talent attached to the project.

The story unfolds around a genius criminal psychologist who becomes embroiled in fierce competition surrounding universities and private foundations. Fueled by personal motivation, Ma Teresa employs every available means to reclaim a university that once belonged to her mother, setting the stage for a battle of wits that promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Director Jang Young Woo, whose credits include the massively successful Queen of Tears, brings his proven ability to craft compelling dramatic narratives to this psychological thriller. The writing team consists of Seo Jae Won, known for The Guest, and Kwon So Ra, the minds behind Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, suggesting a screenplay rich with psychological complexity and unexpected plot developments.

Nana Takes Center Stage in Netflix’s Latest Thriller Venture

Nana assumes the titular role of Ma Teresa, marking her return to Netflix following her standout performances in Glitch and Mask Girl. The acclaimed actress, who first gained recognition as a singer and dancer with the K-pop group AFTER SCHOOL and its popular sub-unit ORANGE CARAMEL, has successfully transitioned into a respected acting career. Her upcoming projects include the steamy drama The Scandal, demonstrating her versatility across different genres. Beyond Netflix productions, Nana has impressed audiences with her work in My Man is Cupid, Genesis, Into the Ring, and Justice.

The character description reveals a fascinating contradiction at the heart of Ma Teresa. Despite bearing a name associated with kindness and compassion, she is fundamentally a misanthrope who rejects social connections. Blessed with inherited intelligence from her accomplished mother and handsome features from her father, Ma Teresa possesses both beauty and brilliance. Rather than using these gifts to help others, she channeled her exceptional abilities exclusively toward achieving personal goals and recovering what was taken from her family. This portrayal promises a complex antagonist who defies easy categorization, elevating the psychological thriller beyond conventional genre boundaries.

Introducing Kim Dan in the Role of Park Seol

Kim Dan stars as Park Seol, a teaching assistant in the Department of Criminal Psychology who contrasts sharply with Ma Teresa’s character. Described as consistently polite and possessing a warm demeanor, Park Seol’s handsome features and genuine smile make him a universally beloved figure throughout the academic institution. His popularity extends beyond students to faculty and staff, creating an interesting dynamic when he inevitably encounters the brilliant but abrasive Ma Teresa.

Kim Dan represents one of the newest generations of Korean actors making their mark on the industry. His filmography already includes roles in two Netflix Korean dramas, a guest appearance in Resident Playbook, and a supporting part as Moon Ung in The Winning Try. The actor is poised for leading roles in the near future, with upcoming projects Men of the Harem and the film Night on Earth scheduled to showcase his capabilities as a main performer. The pairing of Nana and Kim Dan creates an intriguing dynamic that should provide compelling watch as their characters’ paths inevitably cross within the narrative.

Current Development Status and Future Outlook

At present, specific filming dates for Ma Teresa remain under wraps, indicating the series is still in the development phase. While fans eagerly anticipate further announcements, both productions demonstrate Netflix’s continued commitment to expanding its Korean content library with diverse offerings spanning multiple genres. From the messy realities of long-term romance to the calculated machinations of psychological revenge, these upcoming titles ensure that subscribers will have compelling Korean programming to look forward to in the coming years.
