Netflix is betting big on the ice hockey romance wave following the explosive success of Off Campus. The streaming platform has officially greenlit Icebreaker, a live-action series adaptation of Hannah Grace’s bestselling novel.
The announcement has sparked varied reactions from viewers, with many questioning whether the entertainment industry has reached peak hockey saturation after the Off Campus phenomenon. What is it about the frozen rink that continues to captivate audiences? According to fans, the answer lies not in the sport itself but in the simmering romantic tension that unfolds upon it.
Regardless of opinion, the surge of compelling hockey-themed literature and programming shows no signs of cooling down.
The streaming giant is positioning itself to capitalize on this growing fascination. Icebreaker will follow Anastasia Allen, a dedicated figure skater whose entire existence revolves around securing Olympic gold. Her carefully orchestrated trajectory faces an unexpected detour when rink scheduling conflicts force her to share training space with Nate Hawkins, a collegiate hockey captain relentlessly pursuing his dream of reaching the NHL.
The premise guarantees inevitable conflict, passion, and the chemistry that audiences have come to expect from the genre.
The first installment in Grace’s Maple Hill trilogy achieved remarkable commercial success, dominating social media platforms like TikTok and maintaining an impressive 70-week residence on the New York Times bestseller list. The novel has sold over five million copies across 34 international markets and been translated into 24 languages, making the television adaptation a logical next step.
Netflix has enlisted Amanda Lasher, a seasoned industry professional known for her work on Gossip Girl and Togetherness, to helm the project as showrunner. This venture marks a homecoming of sorts for Lasher, who openly shares her long-standing appreciation for young adult romance literature.
“I have been a fan of steamy young adult fiction since seventh grade, reading Judy Blume discreetly hidden behind my school textbook,” Lasher commented. “I adore this genre, and it has been a privilege collaborating with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved Icebreaker novel to life on screen.”
Jade Bartlett, whose credits include Road House and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will co-write the screenplay. Bartlett emphasizes that the series’ appeal stems from the fundamental integrity and goodness embedded within its central characters.
Despite the ambitious production plans, the fan community remains divided. Many took to social media expressing fatigue with the hockey-centric trend, pleading for variety in sporting themes.
Others marveled at how BookTok seems to dictate contemporary Hollywood content decisions. One observer noted, “BookTok is officially running Hollywood, and traditional film enthusiasts are undoubtedly distressed by this shift.”
