Matthew Rhys Makes History with a Double Lead Actor Win
Welsh actor Matthew Rhys became the first performer ever to claim two lead acting trophies in a single Emmy night. He won Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the supernatural sitcom Widow’s Bay and Best Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in the psychological thriller The Beast In Me.
Rhys’s achievement places him in a rare category; although actors such as Alan Alda, Sally Field, John Goodman, Elisabeth Moss and Ted Danson have previously received nominations for two lead awards in the same year, none had previously converted both nods into victories. Accepting his second award, Rhys dedicated the honor to “the great and good people of Wales, who were as much a nurture as anyone else,” underscoring his pride in his homeland.
The Pitt Claims the Coveted Drama Crown
The gritty medical drama The Pitt took home Best Drama Series, a prize traditionally regarded as the night’s most prestigious accolade. The series’ leading star, Noah Wyle, added to the triumph by securing Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second consecutive year, cementing his status as a television heavyweight.
In the drama supporting categories, Tom Pelphrey won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task, while Allison Janney was honored as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work in The Diplomat.
Comedy Champs: Widow’s Bay and Hacks Shine
Widow’s Bay not only earned Rhys his comedy lead award but also secured Best Comedy Series. The show’s writing and direction were recognized with Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Katie Dippold) and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Hiro Murai).
