The Exciting Digital Premiere of Sabar Bonda

Mark your calendars! Sabar Bonda, known informally as Cactus Pears, is set to make its online debut this week. Directed by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, this groundbreaking Marathi film recently gained international acclaim as the first Indian fiction feature to win the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival last year. With a cast led by Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman, this film promises to be a moving exploration of identity and connection.

A Journey from Sundance to Netflix

Following a momentous world premiere at Sundance, Sabar Bonda is making its way back to India. It is slated for release on Netflix on February 6, marking a significant milestone for the film and its creators. This semi-autobiographical work weaves a poignant narrative centered around Anand, a man who returns to his ancestral village in Maharashtra to reconnect with a childhood friend following his father’s passing.

  • The film made history as the first-ever Marathi-language movie to debut at Sundance and even clinched the Grand Jury Prize in the Dramatic category. Since then, it has been showcased at numerous international film festivals.

A Unique Perspective on Queerness in Rural India

Following its successful festival circuit, Sabar Bonda will finally reach its Indian audience. Ahead of its global Netflix debut, the film was previewed at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in Mumbai on February 5, building anticipation for its streaming release. The official Instagram account for the film shared the exciting news of its Netflix launch on February 6, creating a buzz in the LGBTQ+ and Marathi film communities.

In the film, Bhushaan Manoj portrays Anand, a 30-year-old city dweller who faces family pressures upon returning home for a mandated mourning period after his father’s death. Accompanied by his mother, portrayed by Jayshri Jagtap, Anand must endure not only the rituals of grief but also the relentless inquiries about his single status and lack of marriage prospects. His path soon crosses with his childhood friend Balya, played by Suraaj Suman, who now leads a life as a farmer. Together, they navigate the challenges of love and acceptance in the context of queer identities within rural India.

The Vision Behind Sabar Bonda

Director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, who originally studied interior design, was motivated to create this film after the loss of his father, a significant supporter of his creative aspirations. The movie was filmed in the village of Kharshinde, located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, a place that holds deep familial roots for the filmmaker. Production took place from November 2023 to January 2024, capturing the authentic essence of rural life.

In an interesting twist, Kanawade chose to cast theater actors in the leading roles, even engaging in acting workshops with them prior to shooting. Veteran actress Jayshri Jagtap, known from Marathi television, takes on one of her most significant roles, adding depth to the film’s emotional landscape.

A Must-Watch Film for All

As Sabar Bonda approaches its digital release, it promises not only to entertain but also to illuminate vital societal themes. With its heartfelt storytelling and a focus on LGBTQ+ experiences in India, this film is bound to resonate with viewers both locally and globally. Don’t miss this chance to experience a remarkable piece of cinema when it arrives on Netflix.
