Netflix has just added a hidden gem to its streaming library: Dept. Q, the compelling Danish crime thriller series based on the wildly popular novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen. If you’re a fan of gritty, Scandinavian noir, complex characters, and unsolved mysteries, then prepare to be hooked on this series.

Story

Dept. Q follows Carl Mørck, a hardened and world-weary detective who is relegated to a new department – Department Q – tasked with reviewing cold cases. He’s joined by Akram, a Syrian immigrant with a knack for uncovering hidden clues and a surprisingly optimistic outlook, and Rose, a quirky and efficient secretary. Together, this unlikely trio tackles cases that have long been forgotten, uncovering the dark secrets and twisted motives behind them.

Each episode features a standalone case, each more intricate and unsettling than the last. The stories delve into the darkest corners of human behavior, exploring themes of revenge, trauma, and the enduring impact of the past. From missing politicians to brutal murders, the cases are genuinely captivating and will keep you guessing until the very end.

Performances

The heart of Dept. Q lies in its well-developed characters. Matthew Goode as Carl Mørck is a damaged and cynical protagonist, haunted by a past tragedy that shapes his worldview. Alexej Manvelov as Akram provides a much-needed dose of humor and warmth, while Leah Byrne as Rose adds a layer of eccentricity and unexpected competence. The dynamic chemistry between these characters is a constant source of entertainment and provides a welcome contrast to the often bleak storylines.

Behind the scenes

The series is set in the atmospheric backdrop of Copenhagen, which adds another layer of depth to the narrative. The dark and brooding cinematography by David Ungaro perfectly complements the tone of the stories, creating a palpable sense of unease and suspense. The show effectively utilizes the city’s unique architecture and landscapes to create a truly immersive viewing experience.

The writing by Chandni Lakhani and Stephen Greenhorn is spot on with immaculate weaving of the characters and director Scott Frank has done full justice by an engaging narrative that stands apart.

Final Analysis

Dept. Q embodies all the elements that make Scandinavian noir so appealing. The series is dark, gritty, and realistic, with a focus on psychological realism and social commentary. It explores the complexities of human nature and the corrupting influence of power, making for a thought-provoking and ultimately rewarding viewing experience.

This isn’t a series for those who prefer fast-paced action. Dept. Q takes its time to develop the characters and unravel the mysteries, which can be frustrating for some viewers.

If you appreciate intelligent crime dramas with complex characters and intriguing storylines, then Dept. Q is a must-watch. It’s a gripping and atmospheric series that will stay with you long after the credits roll. So, settle in, prepare to be engrossed, and get ready to delve into the dark and fascinating world of Department Q, now streaming on Netflix. Just be warned: you might find yourself hooked!
