The films from Mollywood have become center of attraction as many of the recent ones like Drishyam have got remade into major languages. More films like Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Lucifer, Driving Licence, Helen, Kapella, and Joseph are being remade in Telugu as well indicating the popularity of Malayalam cinema. One such addition is Cold Case which opted for an OTT release and streaming now on Amazon Prime.
Story
The recovery of a skull wrapped in a trash bag found in a fisherman’s net kick start the proceedings with ACP Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) commencing the investigation.
On the flip side, there was Medha Padmaja (Aditi Balan), an investigative journalist who runs a show on paranormal activities. She moves into a rented house with her kid where she gets spooked by certain paranormal activities and she begins her probe to find out more about the spirit that was haunting her.
Both Sathyajith and Medha cross their paths as finding the murderer has become the common agenda for both. But the approach differs and how they both work it out to crack this murder mystery is the remaining story of Cold Case.
Performances
It’s undoubtedly Prithviraj Sukumaran who made Cold Case delectable with his amazing screen presence and towering performance. Equally competent was the performance of Aditi Balan who proved her mettle in a character that was devoid of any usual commercial elements.
Mala Parvathy as the mother of Aditi, Suchitra Pillai as Zara Zacchai, and Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli as Advocate Haritha along with the child actor who played the daughter of Aditi have put up excellent performances to give Cold Case a definitive edge.
Behind the scenes
The debutant director Tanu Balak has done a decent job in making a thriller compounded by supernatural elements on one side and logical investigation on the other side. But during the latter stages, the graph of the narrative dips drastically as things turned quite predictable. The screenplay should have been more gripping to avoid lag in some places.
The music by Prakash Alex and cinematography by Gireesh Gangadharan are the other positive aspects of the film that added more finesse to the proceedings on the screen.
Final Verdict
A novel attempt that should have been handled in a better way. In a nutshell, it’s a well-conceived supernatural thriller that could not deliver the intended kick due to patchy execution is what one feels at the end of the movie. Thriller buffs can give a try with an open mind without going through any comparisons and preconceived expectations.
