The second instalment of Average Joe dropped on August 19, 2026, and is streaming exclusively on Paramount+. Returning viewers discover a more expansive playground – the vibrant streets of Cape Town – while the core quartet of misfit heroes remains the engine that drives the show’s frantic energy. This review breaks down why the series thrives on blunders, how the cast balances comedy with danger, and where the new setting both elevates and strains the formula.

Synopsis

When a mysterious photograph suggests that Joe Washington’s family is under surveillance, the plumber and his tightly‑knit crew – Leon, Cathy and Touch – jet to South Africa. Their mission: locate the elusive “Teddy,” untangle a web of hidden identities, and keep the family safe. Along the way, they encounter coded clues, a ruthless crime lord, and a series of escalating mishaps that turn every plan into a cascade of unintended consequences.

Performances

  • Deon Cole as Joe Washington delivers a grounded yet frantic performance, channeling a father’s desperation while slipping into slapstick moments with effortless timing.
  • Malcolm Barrett as Leon shines as the wildcard information broker, turning useful intel into social explosives that keep the group on edge.
  • Cynthia Kaye McWilliams as Cathy provides the much‑needed anchor, constantly attempting to impose order on a crew that thrives on chaos; her dead‑pan delivery adds a layer of subtle humor.
  • Michael Trucco as Touch balances reckless bravery with a palpable sense of vulnerability, making his impulsive forays into gunfire both tense and oddly comedic.

The chemistry among the four is the series’ secret sauce. Their ability to argue, improvise, and inadvertently sabotage each other creates a rhythm that feels more like a spontaneous jam session than a scripted drama.

Behind the Lens

Director Megan Alvarez embraces the “controlled chaos” aesthetic, allowing camera work to follow the characters’ frantic movements rather than smoothing them out. The Cape Town backdrop is captured with vivid colour grading that juxtaposes the city’s sun‑drenched markets against the shadowy underworld.

Writer Dylan Patel leans into absurdity without abandoning narrative stakes. The script weaves together seemingly implausible plot twists—coded messages, secret relatives, and a hidden criminal empire—yet each revelation is anchored by the characters’ emotional responses, keeping the audience invested.

Composer Rita Kwan underscores the tonal shifts with a score that moves from tense, low‑drone strings during ambushes to quirky, percussive motifs when the group’s plans unravel, reinforcing the show’s blend of thriller and farce.

Final Verdict

Average Joe Season 2 proves that the series’ greatest strength lies in its imperfect heroes. While the Cape Town setting expands the criminal canvas, the real excitement is generated when Joe, Leon, Cathy and Touch turn survival into a domino effect of bad decisions, bruised loyalties and rapid‑fire improvisation. The occasional over‑reliance on external threats—such as the brutal crime boss Sipho (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)—can momentarily dim the show’s signature humor, but the core quartet consistently restores the balance.

Overall, the season delivers a compelling mix of tension and comedy, proving that messy plans can indeed make great television. Fans of character‑driven chaos will find plenty to love, and newcomers will be drawn in by the high‑octane, laugh‑laden action.
