Project Overview
Amazon MGM Studios has officially approved a live‑action television adaptation of the legendary sci‑fi franchise Robocop. After years of development, the series will debut on Prime Video, bringing the cyber‑enhanced law enforcer back to Detroit’s streets. The project marks a significant step in Amazon’s broader effort to transform classic MGM properties into serialized storytelling for modern audiences.
Creative Team and Vision
Peter Ocko, known for his work on Lodge 49, serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. His distinctive narrative style will shape the series’ tone and pacing. Joining Ocko are horror maestro James Wan and his production banner Blumhouse Atomic Monster, who will act as executive producers alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. Danielle Bozzone will co‑execute produce for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
Wan expressed enthusiasm about returning to the Robocop universe:
“I’ve been a massive fan of Robocop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream. What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent.”
He added that the collaboration aims to honor the original’s legacy while delivering something fresh for a global, tech‑savvy audience.
Connection to Original Franchise
The series’ logline describes a powerful tech conglomerate convincing Detroit to deploy a cutting‑edge robot on its police force. The twist lies in the machine’s core: it houses the consciousness of a fallen officer, echoing the core premise of the 1987 film.
Original co‑creator Ed Neumeier is onboard as an executive producer, ensuring a direct creative link to the source material. His involvement guarantees that the series retains the DNA of Alex Murphy’s transformation into RoboCop while exploring new narrative avenues.
Amazon’s Strategy and Future Plans
Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, the studio began evaluating its catalog for television adaptations. Robocop was among the first properties selected for development, alongside titles such as Legally Blonde, Barbershop, Stargate, The Magnificent Seven, Poltergeist, and Fame. Other MGM assets like Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair are earmarked for feature‑film reboots instead.
Development gained momentum in 2024 when Ocko formally joined the project and Wan signed on as an executive producer. Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the series’ potential:
“Robocop is a franchise that has meant something to audiences for nearly four decades—not just as an action spectacle, but as a sharp, provocative mirror of our relationship with technology and power. Peter Ocko has crafted a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today.”
What Fans Can Expect
The new series aims to capture the razor‑sharp satire, brutal action, and thought‑provoking themes that made Verhoeven’s film a classic, while updating those ideas for today’s AI‑driven world. With Ocko at the helm, Wan’s genre expertise, and Neumeier’s franchise insight, the show promises to be more than a nostalgia play—it aspires to resonate with both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers on Prime Video.
