Adolescence emerged as the standout winner at the Gotham Television Awards, securing three accolades, including the title of breakthrough limited series, during the ceremony held on Monday night.
Seth Rogen’s The Studio was awarded breakthrough comedy series, while The Pitt claimed the best drama honor.
During the event, held at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street, the actors, directors, writers, and producers in attendance highlighted the importance of safeguarding the entertainment industry amidst global tensions and concerns about artificial intelligence.
Amy Sherman-Palladino, who accepted the Creator Tribute alongside her husband Daniel Palladino, expressed, “We love this industry. God please help everyone. Let’s make it thrive.”
Enthusiastically, Parker Posey declared, “Let’s keep the arts alive! Let’s transform this business into entertainment that everyone can enjoy—entertainment that appeals to both the elderly and the young, and even makes babies laugh!“
Posey, who received the Legend Tribute, was introduced by her White Lotus co-stars Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell, who delighted the audience by mimicking her character, Victoria Ratliff, with some iconic phrases. “Tsunami! Piper, no! Buddhism!” they exclaimed in an exaggerated Southern accent.
“Thank you, Mike White, for creating this character for me, for believing in a middle-aged woman and for believing in a legend,” Posey stated, provoking hearty laughter from the crowd. “Thank you HBO for having faith in a legend!”
Brian Tyree Henry kept the audience engaged by including the sign-language interpreter in his remarks while accepting the Performer Tribute.
“I want to apologize to the sign interpreter right now, as I’m about to say a lot of words I’m eager to see you sign,” Henry joked. “Words like ‘pussybow,’ ‘SKIMS,’ and ‘circumcision.’”
As expected, Sheryl Lee Ralph moved the audience with a heartfelt tribute to Sidney Poitier, recalling her experience being directed by him in her first film, A Piece of the Action.
“Mr. Poitier looked at me and said, ‘Sheryl Lee Ralph, I expect great things from you… I apologize that the industry doesn’t offer you more, because you deserve it.’ He planted a seed in me that symbolized immense potential,” Ralph reflected. “Believing in that potential drove me to persevere. I continuously honed my craft and pressed on. I wish he were here tonight to see how that seed has flourished.”
With emotion in her voice, Ralph added, “I have worked, I have endured, I have triumphed, and I never gave up. I pressed on because Sidney Poitier believed in me.”
