Karan Tejpal’s directorial debut, Stolen, now streaming on Prime Video, explores the complexities and dangers of empathy. Co-written by Tejpal, Gaurav Dhingra, and Swapnil Salkar Agadbumb, the film centers around a significant misunderstanding that spirals out of control for two affluent brothers.

Story

At first glance, the narrative appears straightforward. Brothers Gautam (Abhishek Banerjee) and Raman (Shubham Vardhan) are en route to their mother’s wedding when their lives take a sudden turn following an encounter at a railway station with a destitute laborer named Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer), whose infant has just been abducted. What begins as a simple case of miscommunication quickly escalates into a harrowing journey filled with suspicion, bureaucratic indifference, and mob frenzy.

Performances

Abhishek Banerjee consistently demonstrates his prowess as one of India’s finest actors, evident in roles across various projects such as Paatal Lok, Mirzapur, Vedaa, Stree 2, and now Stolen. His portrayal clinches the audience’s empathy, making him the character most viewers can connect with, thanks in part to both the writing and his compelling performance.

Shubham Vardhan also shines as Gautam’s morally driven younger brother, Raman; however, the character could benefit from a more nuanced script.

Mia Maelzer, as Jhumpa, emerges as a standout, captivating viewers with her expressive eyes that convey both fear and resolve in her desperate search for her daughter.

Behind the scenes

The film’s strength lies in its earnest performances, which are truly its heart. The cinematography by Isshaan Ghosh and Sachin S. Pillai, alongside Susmit Nath’s sound design and Shreyas Beltangdy’s adept editing, come together to create an electrifying and immersive experience that enhances the storytelling.

Tejpal’s direction is tightly woven, particularly noteworthy in the adrenaline-fueled chase sequences and a harrowing mob-lynching scene in the pre-climax that leaves a lasting impact.

Final Analysis

Having already garnered acclaim at numerous national and international film festivals for its compelling, straightforward plot and outstanding performances from the entire cast, Stolen delves into pertinent social issues such as the exploitation of surrogacy rights and police ineptitude. The film keeps viewers riveted from start to finish, making it a captivating watch.

While Stolen is packed with action, it distinguishes itself from typical thrillers by not being a mere edge-of-your-seat ride. Instead, it deftly balances its adventurous elements with profound messages. Despite the portrayal of class struggles within society, it celebrates the notion that selflessness exists, underscoring the persistence of human goodness. Produced by Gaurav Dhingra and supported by renowned figures such as Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Nikkhil Advani, Stolen is a film that is well worth your time.
