If you find yourself constantly hunting for a gripping, high-stakes whodunit that keeps you guessing until the final frame, the BBC has delivered the perfect tonic for your screen time. The 2025 series I, Jack Wright has arrived, and it is already earning a reputation as an addictive, must-watch thriller for anyone who appreciates the classic puzzle-box style of Agatha Christie.

A Masterclass in Family Dysfunction

The show is the latest project from Chris Lang, the acclaimed mastermind behind the hit series Unforgotten. Lang brings his signature brand of layered, intricate storytelling to this darkly comic exploration of greed and legacy.

The narrative kicks off following the sudden, apparent suicide of wealthy business tycoon Jack Wright. While his death initially seems straightforward, the situation spirals into chaos once his will is made public. His third wife, Sally, and his two sons, Gray and John, are shocked to discover they have been largely excluded from the tycoon’s massive fortune. As the family begins to fracture under the weight of their resentment, the facade of a grieving household disintegrates.

A Deadlier Truth

What begins as a family dispute quickly escalates into a criminal investigation. DCI Hector Morgan and his colleague DC Jones start pulling at the threads of Jack’s life, eventually concluding that his death was not a self-inflicted tragedy, but a calculated murder.

As investigators turn their attention toward the surviving relatives, the series descends into a cutthroat battle for control. With every family member harbouring dark secrets and desperate to claim a portion of the inheritance, the show effectively balances biting humour with high-tension drama.

Critical and Viewer Reception

The series has resonated strongly with audiences, currently holding a robust 81 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Early viewers have taken to social media to heap praise on the production, with many highlighting the standout performance of John Simm and the sheer, “addictive” quality of the writing. One particularly impressed fan noted that the show’s final twist was completely unexpected, a testament to the quality of the screenplay.

Critics have been somewhat more divided, though many acknowledged the show’s entertainment value. The Telegraph awarded it four stars, celebrating it as a “propulsive tale of greed” filled with treachery. The Times echoed this sentiment, labelling it “pleasingly escapist,” while others like RadioTimes.com and The Independent offered more measured takes on the show’s pacing.

An All-Star Ensemble

The success of I, Jack Wright is bolstered by a stellar cast. The titular patriarch is played by Trevor Eve, supported by an incredible lineup including Nikki Amuka-Bird as Sally, and John Simm and Daniel Rigby as his sons. The wider cast list is equally impressive, featuring familiar faces such as Gemma Jones, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Rakhee Thakrar, Harry Lloyd, and Zoë Tapper. This depth of talent ensures that even the most minor characters feel fully realised, contributing to the show’s overall atmosphere of suspicion.

With its impeccable blend of dark comedy, mystery, and family warfare, I, Jack Wright is mandatory viewing for fans of the genre. You can catch the entire series right now on BBC iPlayer.
