The Korean entertainment industry is abuzz with speculation as reports hint at Yoo Ah-in’s possible return to acting through director Jang Jae-hyun’s much-anticipated project, Vampire. This rumored casting has sparked widespread discussion among fans and industry insiders, especially given the actor’s extended break from the spotlight.
On December 17, Korean media outlets suggested that Yoo Ah-in had been selected for a leading role in Vampire, an original supernatural drama from Jang Jae-hyun, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Exhuma, The Priests, and Svaha: The Sixth Finger. The movie is said to offer a fresh reinterpretation of classic vampire mythology, reportedly inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but set against an unconventional backdrop — the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to sources, Jang has spent two years crafting the screenplay and an additional four years preparing for production. If all goes as planned, filming is expected to commence in the latter half of next year. The narrative promises a unique twist on the vampire genre, blending religious elements with eerie folklore to create a distinctive cinematic experience.
However, despite the growing buzz, official confirmation remains elusive. Yoo Ah-in’s agency, United Artists Agency (UAA), responded to the casting rumors by stating, “Nothing has been decided yet,” emphasizing that discussions are ongoing and no final agreements have been reached. Similarly, Jang Jae-hyun himself addressed the matter, firmly stating that Yoo Ah-in’s involvement is “not true” at this stage, stressing that the casting process is still in its early phases.
Yoo Ah-in has been absent from film and television projects for the past three years following a series of personal controversies that significantly impacted his career trajectory. He was initially set to appear in the second season of Hellbound, but his role was recast amid the backlash. Other projects, such as The Match and Goodbye Earth, faced delays or were released with limited promotion.
Despite these setbacks, some filmmakers have chosen to retain his performances. Notably, director Kang Hyeong-cheol kept Yoo Ah-in’s scenes in Hi.5 to maintain the integrity of the film. Yet, the actor has remained largely out of the public eye, refraining from new commitments as speculation about his career comeback continues.
