Netflix’s limited‑run Dutch thriller The Perfect Lie arrived on September 10, 2026, quickly becoming one of the year’s most talked‑about mysteries. Based on Saskia Noort’s bestseller “The Dinner Club,” the series follows Karen and her family after they move to the affluent seaside town of Bergen and are welcomed into an elite dinner club that masks deceit, ambition, and danger behind polished façades. Seven episodes of roughly fifty to sixty minutes each unravel a web of affairs, hidden recordings, and a deadly villa fire, leaving viewers with several unresolved questions as the credits roll.

Plot Recap

The story opens with Karen being questioned by police about the death of Evert, a member of the close‑knit friend circle. Each episode is narrated from the perspective of one of the seven surviving friends, allowing the audience to see the same events through differing lenses. Babette, married to Evert, grows suspicious that Hanneke harbors feelings for her husband, sparking a bitter rivalry. Meanwhile, Karen embarks on a covert affair with Simon, a relationship that stays hidden from the rest of the group.

Tensions rise when Babette claims Evert has become abusive. Patricia uses this allegation to push him out of the gym business he runs with Simon, inadvertently allowing Simon’s illegal operations to continue unchecked.

A pivotal revelation surfaces: Evert never intended to harm Babette; rather, he planned to distance himself from her alleged abusive behavior. Acting on his lawyer’s advice, he secretly recorded his own voice on a separate phone, hoping to document the marriage’s turmoil. That recording later becomes a crucial piece of evidence.

The Fire and Its Aftermath

Babette’s reaction to losing Evert is extreme. She drugs her own family and sets the family villa ablaze, intending to kill everyone inside. Her plan fails when one of the children awakens and forces her to pull the youngsters from the flames. Evert, asleep upstairs, perishes in the blaze.

Karen later discovers Evert’s hidden recording and begins to piece together the truth of that night. When Babette senses that Karen is close to exposing her, she attacks Karen directly. Ivo, to whom Babette had confided, goes to the police with the information, leading officers to Karen’s home just in time to stop Babette from committing further violence.

Simon and Patricia are ultimately arrested as the investigation into Evert’s death also uncovers the illicit business dealings hidden beneath the gym. Simon faces money‑laundering charges but avoids serious punishment by paying modest fines.

Lingering Mysteries

While most plot points find resolution, two major questions remain open:

  1. Who pushed Hanneke off the balcony, leaving her in a coma?
The series frames the police interrogation as covering both Hanneke’s fall and Evert’s death, suggesting a connection between the two incidents.
  2. Who is the hooded figure that appears in Hanneke’s hospital room?
In the final scenes, Karen holds Hanneke’s hand; Hanneke responds to the touch, prompting Karen to call for help. At that moment, a mysterious individual in a hoodie enters the room carrying a red heart‑shaped balloon. The same figure had previously been seen watching Simon and Karen together on the beach. Two dominant theories circulate among fans:
    • Patricia – possibly returning to finish what she started now that Hanneke is showing signs of awakening.
    • Wolf, Hanneke’s teenage son – perhaps acting out of protective fury or confusion.
The show never confirms either hypothesis, leaving the identity deliberately ambiguous.

Book vs. Show

Saskia Noort’s novel The Dinner Club offers a different conclusion. In the book, Karen discovers that Evert wished to leave Babette, that Simon’s business was lethal, and she brings this information to Babette. The confrontation turns violent on a construction site; Babette falls after refusing to let Karen prove her loyalty, Karen saves the baby, and the family ultimately abandons the neighborhood.

Netflix’s adaptation diverges sharply, opting for an unresolved cliffhanger instead of the novel’s definitive ending. This choice fuels ongoing debate and keeps the audience engaged long after the final episode.

What’s Next?

As of this writing, Netflix has not announced a second season. Industry observers speculate that a renewal could arrive as early as 2028, contingent on viewer demand and social‑media buzz. Until then, the fate of Hanneke and the true identity of the hooded figure remain open invitations for fan theories, forums, and continued discussion.
