The Legacy Lives On: Point Break Series Greenlit
AMC Global Media has officially given the go-ahead for a brand-new original series inspired by the cult classic Point Break, set to premiere on both AMC and its streaming counterpart, AMC+. This exciting development signals a major collaboration, with Alcon Television Group leading as the primary studio, joined by AMC Studios and STUDIOCANAL (a CANAL+ company) as co-producers. Fans of the original film can look forward to a fresh take on the high-octane world of adrenaline-fueled heists and law enforcement.
A New Wave of Outlaws: Plot and Premise
Set in the present day, decades after the events depicted in the original, groundbreaking Point Break film, the new series introduces audiences to a fresh ensemble of audacious criminals. This new “heist crew” draws inspiration from, and maintains ties to, the infamous “Ex-Presidents” gang, whose audacious bank robberies became legendary. The narrative thrust sees the FBI once again caught in a desperate cat-and-mouse game, compelled to enlist the aid of a enigmatic former professional surfer with a complicated past to infiltrate this new generation of outlaws.
The series promises to capture the spirit of its predecessor while carving its own path, exploring themes of loyalty, freedom, and the allure of life on the edge. Commissioned by CANAL+ for its expansive global reach across more than 50 countries in France, Europe, Africa, and Asia, the show aims for a truly international appeal.
Architects of Adrenaline: The Creative Minds
Guiding this ambitious project are co-showrunners and executive producers Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers. Kalstein brings a wealth of experience from action-packed dramas such as Treadstone, Quantico, and NCIS: Los Angeles, while Rogers is celebrated for his work on critically acclaimed series like Halt and Catch Fire and Sugar. Their combined expertise promises a compelling and expertly crafted narrative.
Joining them in the executive producer ranks are Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, alongside Alcon Television Group’s head of television, Ben Roberts, and Julia Cohen. Overseeing the project for STUDIOCANAL are M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert, and Daniel Gratton. Further bolstering the production team are co-executive producers Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek, and Gene Hong, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook serving as supervising producers, forming a formidable collective committed to bringing this vision to life.
From Concept to Global Production
The inaugural season will comprise eight episodes, with production slated to commence early next year. This fast-tracked schedule underscores the enthusiasm and confidence of all involved parties. While AMC and AMC+ will be the exclusive home for the series in the U.S. and Canada, STUDIOCANAL is tasked with managing international sales and worldwide distribution, ensuring that the Point Break legacy reaches audiences across the globe. This strategic partnership highlights the increasing demand for high-quality, globally resonant content.
Voices of Vision and Enthusiasm
The announcement has been met with significant excitement from the leadership teams involved. Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, expressed his elation: “When you begin with one of the most entertaining and truly unforgettable action films ever created, add a powerhouse creative team and esteemed producing partners, and witness the massive fan interest that has been evident since we first revealed the series was in development, you arrive at a greenlight decision we couldn’t be more thrilled about. Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have masterfully crafted a story and characters that both honor the film’s enduring legacy and promise to introduce a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”
Kalstein and Rogers themselves shared their profound connection to the original film, stating, “Point Break was the movie that forever altered our perceptions. It stood as a wild, cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that resonated deeply within our souls. As we matured, we realized it impacted millions in the very same way. Point Break is more than just a movie – it’s a distinct perspective on the world. We are profoundly honored to carry this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and STUDIOCANAL. We are meticulously assembling a series that we believe will inspire audiences everywhere to pursue what we call ‘The Ultimate.’”
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson from Alcon echoed this sentiment: “We are incredibly excited to see Point Break transition into full production with AMC. Dave and Chris possess a compelling vision for the series and a clear understanding of what makes this world so captivating. We eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with AMC and the creative team to deliver this series to viewers.”
M-K Kennedy, Managing Director of STUDIOCANAL Worldwide Television, also conveyed her enthusiasm: “The chance to ride this legendary wave alongside AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group, bringing this globally cherished intellectual property to CANAL+ subscribers and audiences worldwide, was beyond compelling. We are eager to begin this journey!”
