Netflix is set to bring Millie Bobby Brown’s bestselling novel, Nineteen Steps, to life on screen, with Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper confirmed to direct. This highly anticipated historical drama marks a significant collaboration, placing Hooper, celebrated for his nuanced direction of period pieces, at the helm of a deeply personal project for Brown, who is also expected to star and produce.

A Master Director’s Touch

The addition of Tom Hooper to the Nineteen Steps team signals the project’s ambitious scope and commitment to quality. Hooper, an Academy Award recipient for Best Director for his work on The King’s Speech, is renowned for his ability to craft compelling narratives within historical settings. His filmography also includes the acclaimed musical Les Misérables and the poignant biographical drama The Danish Girl. His expertise in guiding powerful performances and meticulously recreating historical atmospheres makes him an ideal choice for this emotional World War II story. Hooper has also been recently attached to Photograph 51, an adaptation starring Natalie Portman as pioneering scientist Rosalind Franklin.

Unveiling a Wartime Saga

Nineteen Steps, co-written by Millie Bobby Brown and Kathleen McGurl, delves into the harrowing realities of the Second World War through the eyes of 18-year-old Nellie Morris. The novel, a New York Times bestseller, is profoundly inspired by the wartime experiences of Brown’s own grandmother, bringing an authentic and deeply personal dimension to its narrative.

The story transports readers to Bethnal Green in East London, depicting Nellie’s struggle with the pervasive hardships of wartime life. This includes enduring relentless air raids, coping with strict rationing, and facing the painful separation from loved ones. Amidst this backdrop of adversity, Nellie finds unexpected solace and hope in a burgeoning romance with an American airman named Ray.

At the emotional core of Nineteen Steps is the Bethnal Green Tube disaster, a tragic event that stands as one of Britain’s deadliest civilian incidents during the war. The novel poignantly recounts how 173 individuals lost their lives in a devastating crush while desperately seeking shelter during an air raid, underscoring the profound and often overlooked human cost of conflict.

The Team Bringing the Story to the Screen

Beyond her starring role, Millie Bobby Brown will play a pivotal role behind the camera, producing the film alongside Jake Bongiovi and Bobby Brown under their PCMA banner. Jonathan Eirich will also produce for Rideback, with Nick Reynolds serving as executive producer for the same company.

The screenplay for Nineteen Steps is being adapted by Anthony McCarten, a four-time Oscar nominee celebrated for his exceptional work on biographical and historical dramas such as Bohemian Rhapsody and The Theory of Everything. McCarten’s proven ability to translate complex real-life stories into captivating cinematic experiences further elevates the anticipation for this project, which is currently in active development.

Millie Bobby Brown’s Evolving Career

Nineteen Steps represents another significant stride in Millie Bobby Brown’s rapidly evolving career, showcasing her increasing influence as both a performer and a creative force in Hollywood. Beyond her iconic role in Stranger Things, Brown continues to expand her collaboration with Netflix, with upcoming projects including Enola Holmes 3 and Just Picture It, further solidifying her diverse portfolio of work.

This confluence of an award-winning director, a compelling and deeply personal story, and a multifaceted star promises a powerful and memorable viewing experience for audiences worldwide.
