Television history is about to shift as Paramount+ officially announces the upcoming conclusion of Criminal Minds: Evolution. Despite continuing to rank among the most-watched streaming titles, the celebrated crime procedural will wrap up its remarkable two-decade run following its twentieth season. Fans can expect the final episodes to premiere on the platform in 2027.
This unexpected decision marks the very first series cancellation following Skydance’s recent acquisition of Paramount. The timing has left many viewers and industry analysts surprised, particularly since Season 19 concluded its run just a few months ago, and a twentieth season was formally greenlit as recently as March.
Cast Reactions and Cryptic Clues
The beloved ensemble cast took to social media over the weekend to process the sudden announcement with their followers. A.J. Cook, who has portrayed FBI agent Jennifer “JJ” Jareau since the series first premiered back in 2005, shared a festive Halloween image featuring a customized tombstone for her character. Meanwhile, Paget Brewster, known for her role as Unit Chief Emily Prentiss, kept her message brief with a selfie simply captioned “Free Agent.” RJ Hatanaka, who became part of the team in Season 16, uploaded a heartfelt cast photograph celebrating what he called “the finest group of people.”
Offering a glimmer of hope to anxious fans, Kirsten Vangsness—who brings tech analyst Penelope Garcia to life—posted an optimistic video on Instagram. She directed attention toward specific phrasing in the network’s official statement, which noted that the series is concluding “for now.” Showrunner Erica Messer also released a statement expressing profound gratitude to the hardworking cast, writers, directors, crew members, and the fiercely loyal global fanbase whose unwavering support kept the franchise alive for twenty years, while also acknowledging the abrupt nature of the final decision.
A Resilient Franchise with a History of Returns
This psychological thriller has repeatedly proven its ability to defy expectations. The original iteration of Criminal Minds spent 15 successful seasons on CBS before concluding in February 2020. Proving that the Behavioral Analysis Unit was far from finished, the property was resurrected in November 2022 as Criminal Minds: Evolution, shifting to a streaming format defined by serialized ten-episode story arcs.
The upcoming final season will still feature franchise staples Joe Mantegna, Aisha Tyler, and Adam Rodriguez, alongside special guest appearances by Wayne Brady and Selma Blair.
Is This Truly the Final Curtain?
While Paramount+ has not announced any official plans for future spinoffs or subsequent revivals, many entertainment insiders believe the franchise could eventually find a second life. Given that all nineteen existing seasons remain readily available on the platform and the core audience base is as dedicated as ever, the door may not be completely shut. For the time being, however, the cast and crew are preparing to film one final chapter as viewers continue revisiting decades of suspenseful investigations before the ultimate finale arrives.
