For over thirty years, Howard Gordon has been at the forefront of premium television storytelling, with genre-defining hits like 24 and Homeland. Now, teaming up with Gabe Rotter, Gordon delivers Netflix’s latest must-watch drama — The Beast in Me. With an intriguing premise, impeccably crafted tension, and powerhouse performances from Emmy winners Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, this series is set to be a standout in the fall television lineup.

Story

The Beast in Me centers around Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), a novelist struggling to find her voice after the tragic loss of her son. Her writer’s block is shattered when a new neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), moves in next door. Jarvis, a wealthy real estate tycoon, carries with him the shadow of a notorious past — chiefly, he was once the prime suspect in his wife’s mysterious disappearance.

Their initial encounters are cautious, even tense, but a mutual agreement develops: Aggie will write Jarvis’s story in hopes of reshaping his public image. However, as their meetings progress, suspicion mingles with fascination, and the relationship devolves into a psychological game of cat-and-mouse. Each step Aggie takes closer to the truth raises the stakes — and the danger.

Performances

Claire Danes delivers a deeply layered portrayal of Aggie Wiggs, balancing vulnerability with strength as she navigates grief and uncertainty. Matthew Rhys, meanwhile, is magnetic and unsettling as Nile Jarvis. His cold precision and occasional bursts of menace create one of the year’s most chilling TV villains. A standout moment sees him nonchalantly devouring a whole roast chicken — a mundane act made unnerving through his calculated mannerisms.

Together, Danes and Rhys generate electrifying chemistry, turning every shared scene into a tension-filled masterpiece.

Behind the Scenes

Howard Gordon and Gabe Rotter’s screenplay wastes no time setting the stakes. Each episode is tightly woven without filler, resulting in a fast-paced narrative that demands binge-watching. The production design enhances the atmosphere, with moody lighting and subtly eerie cinematography intensifying pivotal moments. The score is carefully balanced — understated during emotional beats, and sharply heightened in Jarvis’s darker scenes.

Final Verdict

The Beast in Me is an unmissable entry into Netflix’s crime-thriller catalogue. With razor-sharp writing, captivating performances, and an escalating sense of dread that builds episode by episode, it’s a series destined for awards consideration. If you crave a smart, edge-of-your-seat drama, this is one to start — but don’t be surprised when you watch it all in one sitting.
