Disney+ is continuing its aggressive expansion into the East Asian content market with a high-profile Korean adaptation of a beloved Japanese literary classic. On Thursday, the streaming giant officially announced the commencement of principal photography for The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, a live-action series based on the 2012 international bestseller by Keigo Higashino. The novel, which has sold over 13 million copies globally, is set to receive a fresh, Korean-language reimagining slated for a worldwide release in 2027.
A Time-Bending Narrative of Redemption
The story blends low-stakes crime with high-concept fantasy. It follows a trio of petty thieves who, after a failed robbery, seek refuge in a seemingly abandoned general store. Their hideout turns out to be a gateway to the past when they begin receiving letters from people living decades ago, all seeking life advice.
While the source material was previously adapted into a 2017 Japanese film by Ryuichi Hiroki and a Chinese version starring Jackie Chan that same year, this Disney+ original marks the first time the tale will be told as a serialized Korean drama.
A Powerhouse Lead and Emerging Stars
Ryu Seung-ryong takes the helm as Go Min-joong, the empathetic shop owner who serves as the bridge between eras through his mysterious correspondence. This marks a significant “hat-trick” for Ryu Seung-ryong on the platform, following his critically acclaimed performance in the 2023 hit Moving and the ongoing crime drama Low Life.
The roles of the three young criminals at the heart of the mystery will be filled by a trio of rising talents: Kang You-seok (of Resident Playbook), Park Jung-woo (known for 20th Century Girl), and Kim Seong-jeong (of The Woodcutter and the Fairy).
Adding further star power to the ensemble are Kim Hye-yoon, the breakout star of Lovely Runner, Moon Sang-min from Pavane, and Lee Chae-min from Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. The production has also teased high-profile cameos from veteran actors and idols, including Yum Jung-ah, Yeom Hye-ran, Jung Chae-yeon, and Jang Dong-yoon.
Creative Vision and Production
Taking both the director’s chair and the screenwriter’s pen is Park Young-ju. She recently gained acclaim for her 2024 hit Citizen of a Kind, a film that masterfully balanced humor with high-stakes tension. Producing the series is The Lamp, the studio celebrated for the modern cinematic classic A Taxi Driver.
Disney+ Doubling Down on Korean Content
This announcement is part of a broader strategy by Disney+ to challenge Netflix’s dominance in the K-drama landscape. The streamer is rapidly building a robust pipeline that includes the 2026 period crime drama Made in Korea—which was notably renewed for a second season before its premiere—and the royal romance Perfect Crown featuring IU and Byeon Woo-seok.
Other highly anticipated projects on the horizon include the action-packed Gold Land, the supernatural thriller Portraits of Delusion, and the sprawling epic The Remarried Empress. Additionally, fans are looking forward to the 2027 return of A Shop for Killers and a localized remake of the award-winning FX series The Americans.
