Netflix has just added a blast from the past for fantasy fans — Conan the Destroyer, the 1984 sequel to the iconic Conan the Barbarian. While many fantasy follow-ups fail to capture the magic of their predecessors, this action-packed adventure starring Arnold Schwarzenegger has carved out a cult following over the decades, and now it’s ready for a new audience to rediscover.

A High-Stakes Quest Across a Dangerous World

In this chapter of Conan’s saga, the legendary warrior teams up with his quick-witted thief companion after receiving an unusual mission from a powerful queen. Their task: escort the queen’s niece and help her locate a mystical gemstone with extraordinary powers. The journey leads them through treacherous lands filled with mythical beasts, deadly traps, and a shape-shifting sorcerer whose dark ambitions could engulf the world in chaos.

A Cast of Iconic ’80s Personalities

The film boasts a line-up of memorable performances. Olivia d’Abo portrays a sheltered princess stepping into peril for the first time. NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain makes a rare film appearance as a royal guard with a hidden agenda, while music and fashion icon Grace Jones steals the spotlight as a fierce warrior who joins Conan’s band after a dramatic rescue.

Naturally, Schwarzenegger commands the screen as Conan, radiating both raw physical power and a surprisingly playful comedic edge. His portrayal here leans into a mix of charisma, humor, and brute force, making the character even more engaging than in his debut.

From Box Office Disappointment to Cult Favorite

Upon release, Conan the Destroyer underperformed compared to the original, grossing around $30 million against an $18 million budget. Critics at the time were divided, with some lamenting its lighter tone and campier style. However, notable voices like Roger Ebert praised its entertainment value, calling it funnier and more energetic than its predecessor, and applauding Grace Jones’ magnetic screen presence.

Why It’s Worth Watching Today

Free from the burden of origin storytelling, this sequel dives straight into the action, delivering a brisk, adventurous tone that feels closer to the serialized escapades envisioned by Conan’s creator, Robert E. Howard. With its eclectic party of heroes, magical artifacts, and dangerous encounters, the film has a tabletop RPG energy that will resonate with Stranger Things viewers and Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts alike.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of sword-and-sorcery adventures or simply curious about a fantasy film that blends muscle-bound heroics with unabashed ’80s charm, Conan the Destroyer is a worthy addition to your Netflix watchlist. Just be warned — you may find yourself attempting your best (or worst) Arnold Schwarzenegger impressions before the credits roll.
