Expectations soared the moment it was announced that acclaimed director Sekhar Kammula would collaborate with the versatile Dhanush for a social drama. The anticipation further intensified with the inclusion of Akkineni Nagarjuna in a pivotal role and Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead. Sekhar Kammula also raised eyebrows by teaming up with music director Devi Sri Prasad for the first time. All these factors has further peaked the expectations of the audience on Kuberaa which released in theatres today.

Story

The film introduces Neeraj (Jim Sarbh), a powerful businessman aiming to seize control of newly discovered oil reserves in the Bay of Bengal. His strategy involves bribing politicians across the country with a staggering sum of one lakh crore rupees. To facilitate this intricate operation discreetly, he enlists Deepak, a former CBI officer. The narrative unfolds as Deva (Dhanush) crosses paths with Deepak. Who is Deva and how he thwarts the attempts of Deepak and Neeraj with Rashmika is the remaining part of the story.

Performances

Dhanush, known for his exceptional acting prowess, transcends expectations in Kuberaa. As Deva, the beggar, he arguably delivers his career-best performance. His transformation is complete; his expressions, dialogue delivery, gait, and every subtle mannerism convincingly portray a real-life beggar. This memorable portrayal is highly likely to earn him significant accolades.

Akkineni Nagarjuna provides a subtly realistic and impactful performance as Deepak, a man torn between his principles and the necessity to protect his family. It’s refreshing to see him in such a well-written, author-backed character. Sekhar Kammula’s films are known for their strong female characters, and Kuberaa is no exception. Rashmika Mandanna is given a substantial role and performs commendably. Her scenes with Dhanush in the challenging dumpyard setting are particularly noteworthy.

Jim Sarbh is effectively restrained in the antagonist role of Neeraj. Veteran actors like Dilip Tahil and Sayaji Shinde make their presence felt in crucial supporting parts. The three actors who play the fellow beggars alongside Dhanush also deliver convincing performances. Sunaina is effective in her brief role.

Behind the scenes

Devi Sri Prasad’s music emerges as one of the major highlights. His terrific background score significantly elevates many sequences, adding depth and emotional resonance. The songs are also well-integrated and do not disrupt the film’s narrative flow.

Niketh Bommireddy’s cinematography is first-rate, brilliantly capturing the stark visual contrast between the affluent and impoverished sides of Mumbai. Production values by Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP are visibly high, reflecting a substantial investment that translates effectively onto the screen.

Final Analysis

Sekhar Kammula’s talent as a writer shines through in the poignant and thought-provoking dialogues. A specific line by Sameera (Rashmika) about the diverse ways people “beg” encapsulates the film’s underlying theme and exemplifies Kammula’s ability to inject depth and empathy. Throughout the film, numerous sensible and hard-hitting lines provoke thought and foster audience connection with the characters.

Sekhar Kammula maintains a quicker tempo in Kuberaa after the initial setup in what can be called as a paradigm shift for Sekhar who believes in slow paced story telling. The second half, in particular, features several emotionally powerful sequences executed exceptionally well. The scene where Deva carries Kushboo, set against the backdrop of the ‘Shiva Stotram,’ is outstanding – a perfect synergy reflecting Dhanush’s performance, Kammula’s direction, and DSP’s background score. The interactions between Dhanush and Rashmika also greatly benefit the film, marked by genuine chemistry and innocent portrays.

Overall, the significant positives in Kuberaa comfortably overshadow its flaws like run time etc. It is undoubtedly a film worth experiencing in theaters, primarily for Dhanush’s astounding, career-defining performance which is definitely going to be the USP of this engrossing drama.

Sekhar Kammula’s empathetic storytelling and sharp writing embedded with Devi Sri Prasad’s powerful background score are the other chief takeaways of Kuberaa. Given its strengths and the potential for positive word-of-mouth, the film has a strong chance of performing well at the box office.
