The latest buzz in genre circles surrounds “Hivemind,” an upcoming environmental thriller that pits a fledgling squad of small‑town officials against a rapidly evolving strain of killer wasps. Shot on location in Dublin, the film brings together a notable cast—Samara Weaving and Nicholas Braun—under the direction of Ciarán Foy, whose résumé already includes the psychological horror hit Citadel and the Blumhouse sequel Sinister 2.

Plot Overview

According to the screenplay penned by Peter Gaffney (known for Yeti and Don’t Go in the Water), a clandestine genetic experiment has given rise to a new breed of wasp possessing heightened aggression and an uncanny ability to spread rapidly. As the insects begin to swarm rural outskirts, a coalition of local law enforcement, public health officers, and emergency responders must devise a containment strategy before the infestation escalates into a worldwide outbreak. The narrative leans heavily into ecological anxieties, framing the wasp menace as a metaphor for unchecked scientific tampering and climate‑driven ecological imbalance.

Cast and Crew

Samara Weaving, whose recent résumé includes the slasher‑ready Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the action‑comedy Over Your Dead Body opposite Jason Segel, and the upcoming Marvel Studios X‑Men reboot as Emma Frost, takes on a lead role that blends her genre savvy with a fresh, high‑stakes scenario. Nicholas Braun, celebrated for his Emmy‑nominated turn as Cousin Greg in HBO’s Succession and his recent appearance in Amazon MGM’s The Sheep Detectives, joins her as the pragmatic counterpart tasked with coordinating the town‑wide response.

Behind the camera, Ciarán Foy returns to feature‑length horror after directing episodes of The Haunting of Bly Manor and Sweet Tooth. His experience with atmospheric tension in Citadel and the supernatural dread of Sinister 2 positions him well to balance the film’s creature‑feature thrills with a grounded, procedural feel.

Production Background

Badlands secured Gaffney’s spec script in 2025 and is co‑producing the picture with Thunder Road and Wild Atlantic Pictures. Amazon MGM Studios has come aboard as a streaming partner, planning an international debut on Prime Video. While the film enjoys robust backing for overseas distribution, domestic rights remain open, with CAA Media Finance and Verve handling sales negotiations.

The producer lineup features Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Diarmaid McGrath for Thunder Road, Scott Strauss for Badlands, Macdara Kelleher and John Keville for Wild Atlantic Pictures, alongside Adam Rodin and the screenwriter Peter Gaffney. Jon Shiffman and Andrew Schwartzberg serve as executive producers for financier Renegade Capital.

Filming Status and Release Outlook

Principal photography is currently underway in Dublin, utilizing the city’s mix of historic architecture and contemporary urban landscapes to evoke the feeling of a tranquil community suddenly besieged by an invisible threat. Amazon MGM Studios confirms that “Hivemind” will roll out internationally via Prime Video once post‑production wraps, though a specific launch date has yet to be announced. Domestic distributors are still being courted, leaving room for a potential theatrical or hybrid release in North America.

Why Hivemind Matters

In an era where audiences are increasingly attuned to environmental narratives—think The Revenant’s wilderness survival or Don’t Look Up’s satirical take on planetary crisis—“Hivemind” offers a fresh spin by marrying creature horror with genuine ecological concern. The film’s premise invites viewers to ponder the consequences of bioengineering gone awry while delivering the pulse‑pounding thrills that fans of Weaving’s and Braun’s previous work have come to expect.

As the production progresses, industry watchers anticipate that “Hivemind” could become a standout title in Amazon MGM’s growing slate of genre fare, potentially paving the way for more internationally co‑produced horror‑science hybrids that prioritize both spectacle and substantive storytelling.
