A predictable story dipped in cringe humour

The Covid-19 pandemic has compelled one more mainstream film Ginny Weds Sunny to skip a theatre release after a long wait to feature on streaming platform Netflix.

Storyline

Shobha Juneja (Ayesha Raza) is worried about her daughter Ginny’s (Yami Gautam) future. She doesn’t like Ginny’s frivolous attitude towards marriage and decides to take the matter into her own hands. When she sets her eyes on Sunny (Vikrant Massey), she immediately decides that he is the ideal husband for her daughter.

Even though Ginny had a soft corner for her ex-boyfriend Nishant (Suhail Nayyar) but pretty soon she also starts enjoying the unwanted attention coming from this new quarter in the form of Sunny. The story does not end in a visionary or insightful manner yet the characters get their happy ending.

Performances

Despite having an amazing star cast, Ginny Weds Sunny fails to make a mark. Though Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam seem to be brilliant in their respective roles, the storyline is a slow killer and extremely desultory.

The parents in this movie try to bring a new flavour but they end up making it even blander. They indulge in nasty humour and meaningless antics to make the film a test for endurance.

What’s even more disappointing is that such a brilliant star cast signed up for a movie that tries to promote every stereotype that the society wants to get rid of.

Behind the scenes

Debutant Puneet Khanna’s direction seems refreshing. The movie has been shot in beautiful locations. Nuthan Nagaraj, the cinematographer deserves due credit for his brilliant effort.

Writers Navjot Gulati and Sumit Arora end up weaving a weak plot full of clichés. But the songs are groovy enough to make your feet tap. The best part about this movie is the songs composed by Payal Dev, Gaurav Chatterji, and Jaan Nissar Lone.

Verdict and Rating

The story aims to add a twist to the generic plot of arrange marriage Vs love marriage but fails miserably.

If you want to waste two precious hours of your life watching a promising actor chase a heroine leaving behind everything, Ginny Weds Sunny is the film for you.

The film encourages stalking a girl, saying cheesy stuff to woo her, dominant and insecure males fighting over the alleged love of their life and whatnot. Overall, it has not been a pleasant experience.

Rating – 2.5/5
